Teams of Olympic hopefuls from the GB cycling team will be heading to Northeast’s Cyclone Festival of Cycling weekend in June
News – GB heading to Beaumont Trophy
EVENT PRESS RELEASE
Two teams of Olympic cycling hopefuls have signed up for Newcastle and Northumberland’s Cyclone Festival of Cycling. The Great Britain Cycling Team has entered a team of Olympic Academy male riders for the historic Beaumont Trophy race on Sunday 19th June whilst the all-new women’s Team Breeze squad is entered for the Curlew Cup women’s race on the same day.
Cyclone Festival of Cycling organizer Peter Harrison said: “The Cyclone Festival of Cycling’s Beaumont Trophy and Curlew Cup races have a history of bringing the UK and the world’s top riders to our region. It’s always to exciting to have such a line-up of stars racing right here on our doorsteps.â€
The strong teams are full of future Olympic cycling hopefuls. Between them, they have more than 10 World Cup and World Championship medals and major cycling road race wins. Emily Nelson also finished an impressive fifth in the Points Race at the recent UCI Track Cycling World Championships in London.
Great Britain Cycling Team riders entered for the Beaumont Trophy are Germain Burton, Gabriel Cullaigh, Nathan Draper, Matt Gibson, Mark Stewart and Oliver Wood.
Keith Lambert, road coach for the Great Britain Cycling Team’s senior academy said: “We’ve got a strong squad of talented young riders and I’m sure whoever we select for the race will be riding hard to try and add their names to the prestigious list of past winners which includes riders like Sir Bradley Wiggins and Chris Newton. Chris Latham won the event last year as an Academy rider so we are defending the title. We’re all looking forward to the racing.â€
Team Breeze riders entered for the Curlew Cup include Megan Barker, Abigail Dentus, Emily Kay, Dannielle Khan, Manon Lloyd, Melissa Lowther, Emily Nelson and Annasley Park. Chris Newton, Women’s Endurance Academy coach, added: “This will be one of the first opportunities for Team Breeze to get out on the road and test themselves against some of the best domestic road racers in the country. The team made a successful debut at Revolution earlier this year and we’ll be hoping to see some good performances from the team again here.â€
The Cyclone Festival of Cycling is one of the UK’s biggest cycling festivals and celebrates its 10th anniversary in 2016. It takes place from 17-19 June 2016 and includes the Virgin Money Tyne Six Bridges family and leisure rides, the hugely popular Virgin Money Cyclone Challenge rides of 34, 64, 90 and 106 miles and the Curlew Cup and Beaumont Trophy races.
The Curlew Cup is one of the leading women’s bike races in the UK. Celebrating its fifth anniversary in 2016, it is part of the British Cycling Women’s Road Series. Past winners have included Paralympic cycling legend Dame Sarah Storey. The Beaumont Trophy is one of only five international ‘UCI 1.2’ races in the UK. It is a road bike race that has run since the 1950s and seen famous winners, including Sir Bradley Wiggins.
Both the Curlew Cup and Beaumont Trophy start and finish in Stamfordham on Sunday June 19 and are great, easy and free to watch.
