Win for Endura in Cinturon Ciclista with Iker Camano winning the overall and Endura being the top team.
The final stage of the 2011 Cinturon Ciclista has been won in a bunch kick by a German rider and in the group was Endura Racing’s Iker Camano who won the second UCI stage race for the team in 2011.
The stage began with a break of eight riders but with no-one in the lead group a danger to the overall, they were given some leeway by the Endura controlled peloton. The teams in control of the overall were not going to let the lead of the break get out of control and with 40k to go, the lead was coming down and with 20k to go, the lead of the break was less than 20 seconds.
The writing was on the wall for the break and with five kilometres to go, the race was together for a bunch kick. Speaking to Endura’s director sportif Julian Winn afterwards, he explained “with the other teams on GC helping, that worked in our favour today but Endura did the majority of the stage until about 3k to go, keeping everything under control.”
“It was a pretty standard run in and the Endura boys did a really good job. We stayed out of it for the sprint and weren’t even contemplating a stage win. The goal was to get Iker from start to finish in the yellow jersey. That was the most important thing.â€
The stage race was the team’s second stage race victory in 2011, the other being the Tour of Normandy with Alex Blain. Asked about this, Julian explained “we have had two different stage race wins with two sets of different riders and that shows the strength in depth. We’ve bonded really well this season and when you start winning ,you grow as a team and gain in confidence.â€
The yellow jersey, Iker Camano said afterwards “the team worked really really fantastic today. There was a break of eight of riders and the team had to control the race. For me, this is a good victory and for the team it is important. Majorca has been good for us with a stage and now the yellow. The most important moment was yesterday after the king of the grande (Soler) and the leader was behind us. I caught Rob (Partridge) and he worked very hard for me and the GC. This for sure was the most important moment for the race.â€
It has been Iker explained, a good season so far which started in Argentina and included a lot of top pro races including the Tour of the Med, Haut Var, Coppi e Bartali and Tour of Mercia. It has been hard he said because all these have been good races and that has helped him have the form to win in Majorca. Congratulations to all the British teams who competed in Majorca and helped make the race.
In other news from the race, Ed Clancy was 7th on the stage for Rapha Condor Sharp who were feeling tired after a hard race. They now head for a stage race in Korea. Raleigh’s Richard Handly meanwhile has won the King of the Mountains jersey, Motorpoints Ian Bibby the Points jersey and Pendragon were 1-2 in the Under 23 Competition. My thanks to John Herety for the update. Motorpoint meanwhile report that in a chaotic finish, Points winner Ian Bibby and Tobyn Horton were about in or around the top 10. Approaching the finish line, there were two ways to go around a central reservation and the Motorpoint riders went right, but as luck would have it, it was quicker going left which left them a little further back with 500 to go than they would have liked. Ian Bibby finished the race in 3rd overall and Points winner. It was according to director sportif Chris Truett, a great way to kick off their Tour programme of racing.
