Hargroves Cycles Ridley rider Ian Field was the best of the Brits in a memorable Elite Men’s race at the World Cyclo-Cross Championships
Cross Worlds – Ian Field 28th
After the astonishing first day at the World Cyclo-Cross championships where Great Britain not only had a victory but also two fifth places, it was up to the senior men to see where they are in the World on day 2.
It began with National Trophy winner for the Under 23’s Nick Barnes (Hargroves Cycles-Ridley) finishing 38th behind winner Eli Iserbyt of Belgium who beat the Czech Republic’s Adam Toupalik in a sprint to the stripes.
Nick Barnes said of the race “The atmosphere is fantastic. I raced a lot harder here purely and simply because you’ve got people cheering you on. Even being around 30th where I was – around about – you got so many people still cheering for you, it’s fantastic. It’s such a fast course using the drier tyres because if you use the muds they slow you down so much.”
“There were some really slippery corners out there though, especially on the first lap when everyone is going crazy. I came down once on the first lap when I was going over a bridge and got tangled with two guys and I ended up coming off worst but racing is racing.â€
Elite Men
In the Elite Men’s race, Ian Field (Hargroves Cycles-Ridley) was GB’s best placed rider in 28th. While ahead of him, the battle between Belgium and Holland with legend Sven Nys in the mix was keeping the fans in fine voice, the four time British champion kept the hammer down.
Whilst the cameras focused on Wout Van Aert (Belgium) and Lars Van de Haar (Netherlands) and their battle front with the Belgian getting the victory, just, Ian Field battled hard for his position saying “It was a tough day out. I got a really good start and was 18th but I couldn’t quite hold it.”
“I felt good, but not really good, and it has been a long season. It wasn’t the best course in the world for me but I put it all out there and being in a position to do a good ride, did my best.â€
British champion Liam Killeen was 37th and David Fletcher 49. Jack Clarkson did not finish saying “Gutted to pull out after my wipe out today! Really sore shoulder and knee and the pride has been battered too!”
