Raleigh GAC rider Mathieu Boulo makes British champion Liam Killeen work hard for the victory in the final round of the National Trophy at Milton Keynes
Live: National Trophy MK
The finale for the 2015/16 National Trophy Cyclo-Cross series was held at the brilliant venue of the Milton Keynes Bowl and in contrast to the weather for the other rounds, this one had snow! Whilst the proper winter scene of a blanket of snow on the ground gave the look of the final round something different, the nature of the day was very similar to others, ie, MUD!
This meant there was some real tough running to be done, up hills that even the best riders on the day were having to push hard on to make any headway on the grippy course. The mud though also made the course lethal in parts and the descent near the finish area saw the riders going down the slopes on their ass one after the other making it very popular for spectators.
Above, Ian Taylor comes to grief on the tricky off camber descent
Even a great champion like Tim Gould crashed down the slopes but being the legend he is, with rival Chris Young going full gas ahead, Gould got his race together and came from a long way back to win the over 50s race.
In the 40-49, Rob Jebb unsurprisingly won that race although the Taylor brothers Ian and Andy did lead for a while early on. The mud and the running through played into Jebb’s hands and he literally ran away with the victory and the series.
Women’s Race
With series winner Hannah Payton not racing at Milton Keynes, the event at the MK Bowl was very open but unsurprisingly, the talented Junior British Champion, Sophie Wright made the race her own.
As the conditions took their toll as the race went on, Wright bossed her rivals on a course that suited her. Battling with Ffion James, Wright handled that pressure with ease and rode clear to solo to victory half a minute ahead of the Welsh girl James. In third was Bethany Crumpton.
After the race, Wright explained to British Cycling “It’s amazing to get a first Elite win at the end of the season as a first season junior. I got an OK start and then really worked my way up to second towards the end of first lap. With about three laps to go, I thought it was time to attack so I attacked on the start-finish line and just put the pressure on. I dropped my chain but was close to the pits so just ran there and didn’t panic. I had an off on the last lap but it was quite fun actually, I just went sliding down the hill”.
England versus France in Men’s Race
See how the race looked on video …
The final race of the day saw the British champion Liam Killeen grace the event which when the event saw so many non-starters was a great coupe for organiser Kelvin Hoy.
Without series winner Ian Field (Hargroves Cycles Ridley) who was away on World Cup duty, the race could have been a walk over for Killeen but Raleigh GAC brought Frenchman Mathieu Boulo to the race and what a race he made of it, pushing Killeen all the way and finishing second. David Fletcher was third after a hard fought race with Paul Oldham and Nick Craig among others.
Liam Killeen said of his victory to British Cycling: “Today was tough, the conditions made it really hard. You could sense it was the National Championship last weekend, there was a lack of motivation among the guys. But it was a good race, they put on a good event.”
“I wasn’t aware who the Raleigh rider was, I thought it was Steven Roach but I could hear people cheering for Matthieu so I knew it was Boulo. He was putting me under pressure on the running sections. But like last week, I felt strong once I was back to peddling. The lead changed quite a bit between us but on the last two laps, I just tried to press on and pick the smooth line. Luckily, I got a feel for it.”
Other Races
The Junior race was a victory for British Champion Mark Donovan who was part of a four way battle during the race along with Will Gascoyne, Ben Turner and Harry Yates (Hargroves Cycles-Ridley).
As the race went on through, it was the on-form Will Gascoyne who was pushing Donovan to the max with Yates in touch in case any of them made a mistake but alas for him, they didn’t. British Champion Mark Donovan got to celebrate the victory in the stripes only seconds ahead of Gascoyne with Yates a little further back.
Donovan said “It was a course to not take too many risks on, if you do take risks, there’s a chance you’ll fall off with some nasty off-camber corners. You have to be careful. Will Gascoyne pushed me all the way to the line.â€
In the Under 16 Girls, series winner by a mile, Poppy Wildman beat champion Megan James with Kim Baptista in third. In the Under 14 girls, sisters Maddie and Anna Wadsworth finished 1-2 ahead of the series winner and National Champion Ava Oxley-Szilagyi.
The Under 16 Boys event saw Euan Cameron and series winner Lewis Askey (RST Cycle Division swapping the lead) with Cameron going on to win from Askey with Charlie Craig in third. The Under 14 boys saw Emile Alexander take his fifth win of the Series beating Alec Gregory and Oliver Stockwell.
New signing for RST/Cycle Division is series winner for U16 boys, Lewis Askey.
