1. What were your highlights in 2015?
Tom: During 2015 I loved the crit races at Castle Combe, Thurxton and Winchester. British cycling gave me a chance to race with the seniors which was a great challenge on restricted gears. I had some good races on the track taking some youth wins at Bournemouth track open events but had the misfortune of breaking my collarbone this year which messed my season up, but I came back strong. I am hoping to have a smooth run up to the new 2016 season.
2. What races are you looking forward to most next season and why?
Tom: National road and track events. I’ve been spending more time on the track this winter and feel a big improvement in my speed. Really looking forward to the national track events at Manchester and being part of such an amazing event. Will be racing with the 3rd cats again this season to gain experience of racing longer distances in preparation for turning junior.
3. What race was the most fun in 2015 and why?
Tom: Winchester crits provided some great racing during 2015, tight corners with fast straights. In one race, a guy got away with four of us in the chasing group and one by one I dropped them leaving me to pull everything out to try and get in contention for the win, he just stayed away from me but it was a great race and a nice second place.
4. What’s the best piece of cycling related advice you’ve ever been given that has made a difference and who gave it to you?
Tom: Ride aggressive and never be afraid of taking the race on. Race hard and get out of your comfort zone. My dad.
5. Tell us about your winter training bike, what is different about it compared to your race bike?
Tom: I’m a big Specialized fan and during winter I ride an entry level Tarmac with guards fitted, 25mm tyres with puncture protection and Exposure lights. Race bike is a Specialized S-Works Tarmac but for 2016, I am moving onto a Specialized Venge, more aero and very stiff, ideal for crits with Fulcrum wheels and Continental GP 4000 tyres. I love getting the race bike out as it feels amazing after riding the winter bike with heavy tyres.
6. How will you spend December on the bike – at home or abroad, long miles only or a mixture of intervals and miles and bike only or gym/cross training too?
Tom: I train 11 hours a week which consists of turbo, watt bikes, 2 hour level 2 rides and 3-4 hour Sunday rides. Gym work twice a week which is fun during the winter months. Over Christmas I’ll be getting in some fun mountain bike rides with a few mates over the Purbecks, and some long hilly road rides. I really enjoy getting off-road this time of year and lucky enough to live in an area where we have some great tracks for night riding.
