Nikki Harris stars at round 3 of the BWA West Midlands Cyclo Cross League at the Heart of England Conference Centre on Sunday
Report – West Midlands Cyclo Cross League 3
The Heart of England Conference Centre was the venue for Round 3 of the BWA West Midlands Cyclo Cross League supported by Ridley Bikes and Lazer Helmets and superbly organised by the Solihull CC.
A venue that promises to expand and can easily cope with more events was graced by none other than GB International and Belgian domiciled Nikki Harris. Nikki gave a masterclass in Cyclo Cross technique and was in a race of her own as she left the other Women competitors and tore into the minute lead given to the V50 males, very nearly catching them all.
This bodes well for the season ahead and Nikki promised to keep an eye out for any Juniors and U23s, Male or Female who make the trip over to Belgium supported by the West Midlands Bursary now in it’s second year.
The most exciting race of the day had to be the Senior and Junior event where the two categories race head to head after an AGM rule change in the off season. Cameron Biddle of the promoting club was out to make an impression and shot off the line into an immediate lead but then the experienced Dan Fleeman and George Moore, briefly joined by Pete Banham before suffering a fork breakage, charged by the youngster who was clearly suffering for his first lap charge and slipped back to 10th.
Fleeman and Moore rode consistently quickly at the front as behind Junior Ewan Grivell-Mellor tried and failed to get on terms for several laps before Matt Barrett and Phil Hinch tried their luck only to have a clearly recovered Cameron Biddle come flying past in a lone chase of the leaders. It was all shaping up to be a last lap showdown as Fleeman attacked Moore with Biddle tantalisingly close but just as the chasing Moore went past the pits for the penultimate time an untimely puncture dropped him to 6th and Biddle just ran out of distance to catch a deserved winner in Dan Fleeman.
