Tom Stewart of Madison Genesis retains King of the Mountains jersey on stage three of the Tour of Britain
Team News – Stewart Holds onto Jersey
Tom Stewart remained King of the Mountains for Madison Genesis following stage three of the 2015 Aviva Tour of Britain.
Stewart remained attentive to the danger on the road, sprinting to the second category summit of Dingleton and assuring the jersey stayed on his shoulders for another day.
At the front of the race Matt Cronshaw made the breakaway, which originally contained six and was whittled down to three with 50-kilometres of the 216-kilometre stage to race.
Cronshaw and his assailants – Tyler Farrar (MTN Qhubeka) and Marcin Bialoblocki (One Pro Cycling) – were cruelly caught with four kilometres remaining.
Team manager Roger Hammond believed today the break would be successful – but insisted the team would not give up on individual success in the race.
“It was an ideal scenario, when Quick Step and Sky sat up it looked as if it was odds on for the break” Hammond explained.
“But bike racing is bike racing and for some reason Garmin Cannondale decided to chase.
“We’re doing the first bit right, now we just need a little luck. I’m pleased with the guys, today was a cracking ride.”
Hammond was also full of praise for Stewart, in his defence of the climber’s jersey.
“Tom is quite liking being in a jersey so he will try again tomorrow, but it is not easy. We are trying to ride a race within a race.
“The guys have prepared well the last month and I’m not worried about the fatigue and recovery – they will still be strong. When they come down to breakfast in the morning they still have some colour in their faces.”
On the way to a frenetic finish in Kelso, a crash in the closing stages delayed all of the Madison Genesis riders, however the squad made it safely over the line – albeit with some time lost.
Stage four of the 2015 Aviva Tour of Britain covers 217-kilometres from Edinburgh to Blyth, with further tests for Tom Stewart in the defence of his King of the Mountains jersey.
