Jon Mould (One Pro Cycling) looks to a big 2016 after taking crown in 2015 Elite Circuit Series
News – Jon Mould after more glory
Issued on behalf of the 2015 Abergavenny Festival of Cycling
NEWPORT’S Jon Mould is looking to the future and more glory after his Elite Circuit Series victory was officially crowned in Abergavenny on Friday night.
Mould, of the One Pro Cycling team, sealed the Series on Wednesday at the Chepstow Grand Prix but was hoping to put the cherry on the cake by taking the grand finale at the Abergavenny Festival of Cycling on Friday night.
The 24-year-old made a couple of attacks as he was cheered on by the passionate home crowd that lined the streets of Abergavenny town centre during the race which lasted for an hour plus five finishing laps.
Despite his efforts, Mould ended back in the pack as Doncaster’s Graham Briggs won the stage victory.
However, just like Chris Froome experienced in the Tour de France when he rode into Paris, the last stage did not matter as Mould celebrated a first big overall circuit series win of his career.
Mould said: “It has been a good month. I have got to train quite hard and so it has been good. “There was a fast first 20 minutes of the race tonight and a bit of cat-and-mouse for a bit and we started racing again for the last ten minutes.”
And Mould was aware of the support he received from the local crowd in Abergavenny. “It was good to win this here. I heard a lot of ‘Go on Mouldy’ and recognised the voices.”
Now, with a big year in 2016 on the horizon plus the build-up towards the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Australia, Mould is hoping more success will follow.
And with Welsh cycling flying at the moment on the men’s side, with Cardiff duo Geraint Thomas and Luke Rowe both having just completed the Tour de France and youngster Scott Davies, from Carmarthen, hot on their heels, Mould is slowly putting himself into the bigger picture.
“There are a lot of Welsh boys doing well now. We are all mates and we all race and train together. This is an overall series but next year is a big one when I am moving up again and hoping for better things with the Tour of Britain and onwards.”
