News – 22nd World Title for Storey

After attacking on the first lap and opening up a comfortable lead, none of her rivals could get near her and she finished well clear of second placed rider Anna Harkowska, as she had in the time-trial two days earlier.

Storey, was delighted with her victory “I feel really good. It was one of those races that could easily have been a totally different race. After about a kilometre, I could feel riders on my back wheel and there was a clatter of carbon behind me. I decided that’s it I’m not sitting in the bunch anymore. I just stretched it out and just kept pushing and looked round and thought this is a decent gap, so I pressed on and the gap quickly opened up”.

“The worlds before a Paralympic year, in any sport, are the hardest because everyone wants to take the psychological advantage into the Paralympic year. Next year will be my third Paralympics as a cyclist, and you need to take those psychological scalps. The next 12 months people really begin to ramp it up so it’s a really good indication of where you are and what you need to do.”

It was a mixed day for the rest of the Great Britain Cycling Team. Simon Price probably came closest to adding to the team’s medal haul after just missing out on a bronze medal in C2 men’s road race in a closely contested sprint finish.

There were also fourth place finishes for Hannah Dines and Megan Giglia but neither rider was in medal contention. Defending world champions Lora Turnham and Corrine Hall came sixth in the women’s tandem race, while an early attack left Steve Bate and Adam Duggleby out of the running in the men’s tandem event. Liz Saul rounded the day off in the C4 race.

The final day of racing will see Karen Darke in action in the H3 women’s road race and she will be hoping to get on the podium after finishing fourth in Friday’s time-trial.
