Geraint Thomas moves up to second in the overall standings at the Tour de Suisse after an agressive finale nets him 5th
Tour de Suisse – Stage 2
Geraint Thomas moved up to second in the overall standings at the Tour de Suisse after Kristijan Durasek had sprinted to victory on the second stage. Thomas launched numerous attacks on a mountainous finishing circuit, but it was a late break by the Lampre-Merida rider that proved the difference in Risch-Rotkreuz.
Thomas had moved to the front on the second ascent of the Michaelskreuz climb, with only Jakob Fuglsang (Astana) and Julian Arredondo (Trek Factory Racing) able to cope with his acceleration.
The Welshman continued to press hard on the descent which followed, but with little help coming from his fellow breakaway riders, that lead group swelled with Arredondo and overnight leader Tom Dumoulin (Giant-Alpecin) both regaining parity.
A number of riders then tried to sprint clear in the closing stages but everyone was caught napping when Durasek kicked immediately after the flamme rouge. The response from the remaining eight chasers came too late and they crossed the line four seconds behind the Croatian. Daniel Moreno (Katusha) pipped Arredondo to second place on the stage, with Thomas rolling home in fifth.
The result was enough to lift Thomas from 10th to second, and he now sits seven seconds behind Dumoulin heading into the third day of action.
