In probably the hardest event at a Track Cycling World Cup, the Madison, two of the country’s strongest riders, Mark Christian and Owain Doull, stole a lap from their rivals and clinched the Gold medal in an event that had the crowd on their feet. Doull (AN Post) and Christian (Raleigh), who won Team Pursuit gold on Friday, had to dig deep to prevent Australia taking a lap in the final moments of the 120-lap madison and deny them victory. The duo received a standing ovation after fighting to a gold finish fnding off competition from Australia, New Zealand and Germany until the bitter end in a 120 lap race averaging a thrilling 56.8 kilometers an hour.
“The crowd lifts you so much,” said Doull. “When the lactic kicks in and you’re really suffering, the noise carries you on. It’s unbelievable.” “That’s a good way to finish the racing for us,†Mark Christian (Tean Raleigh) said. “Great day yesterday to come away with the gold medal in the way we did and in here tonight, what a race to be part of. Everyone’s mentioned the crowd and I’m going to do it again. I can’t thank the crowd enough for the lift they give you. The atmosphere that’s generated in here is incredible. It is an advantage, definitely.â€
In the Women’s Omnium, the battle for the Gold is between Britain’s Olympic heroine Laura Trott and Holland’s road star Kirsten Wild. Every now and then, a legend is born into the sport and stands head and shoulders over her fellow country women (or men) and that rider is Laura Trott.
Like Victoria Pendleton, Bradley Wiggins and Chris Hoy to name three before her, Trott is almost unbeatable on the track and on day two of the World Cup in the Women’s Omnium, she won two out of the three races and was second in the other. Unfortunately for her, Kirsten Wild has been second to her in the events Trott has won and in the event Trott was beaten, it was by Wild. Hence, there is only two points between them going into the final day.

Qualifying for the Keirin final via a nail-biting repechage, Great Britain’s Jason Kenny faced disappointment after finding himself boxed in during the race, coming in sixth with Stefan Botticher of Germany taking the gold. In the Women’s Sprint, both Great Britain’s Jess Varnish and Vicky Williamson were knocked out of the competition early on with Gold going to German World champion, Kristina Vogel after a final battle with Russia’s Anastasiia Voinova.
Elinor Barker took the first accolade of the night, securing bronze in the Women’s Points race with gold going to Australia’s Amy Cure, followed by Canada’s Jasmin Glaesser in second place. Elinor said afterwards “I’m really happy with that, especially after having three Team Pursuit rides yesterday, really happy. I didn’t think I was going to get a medal. It took me a while to get it into it.â€
In the Men’s omnium, after three events, Britain’s Jon Dibben sits in 11th. Going into the Elimination race in third place, a problem with a pedal saw him eliminated early, costing him dearly in points but as ever, the final race of the Omnium on Day three, the Points event, will be key. Leading the board going into Sunday’s concluding three races is Colombia’s Fernando Gaviria with Frenchman Thomas Boudat in second place.
