Healthcare Management Trust announces the launch of its own cycling academy for aspiring professional cyclists. The creation of the team marks the turn towards a more public role in the world of cycling for HMT.
The healthcare provider has played a significant behind the scenes role supporting riders from Rapha Condor – JLT, Haribo Beacon and Team Sportscover over recent seasons. The HMT Academy will consist of four riders who will compete in the British National Junior RR (Peter Buckley) Series as well as several international junior single and multi stage races.
Continuing its relationship with Condor Cycles, the HMT Academy will share its colours and a number of suppliers with Condor’s new UCI registered team for 2015. Completing the link with Condor, HMT announce the continuation of their support for Condor’s professional road team with their role as official healthcare provider to the team confirmed for the 2015 season.
A full announcement of the name and sponsorship roster for their 2015 team is due from Condor later in the Autumn.
The healthcare support of both Condor and the HMT Academy are integral parts of a broader public health and community engagement strategy being pursued by the Trust.
Tony Barrett, Chief Executive of the Trust comments “Cycling as an exercise and recreational pursuit has many benefits for health and is a great form of low impact exercise for all ages. Our long standing support of John Herety and his riders and now the HMT Academy provides an aspirational focus for diet, healthy weight maintenance and exercise, in particular for the young who we hope will follow the example of the elite athletes and establish the early habits of a good diet and regular exercise which will last a life timeâ€
John Herety Manager of JLTCondor Cycling Team comments: HMT have been an important part of the teams I have directed over the last few years. The demands of supporting the UK calendar on squads of only 12 riders means that injury and illness have the potential to quickly derail a season and HMT have been instrumental in minimizing the impact of these factors on the performance of my team.”
On the road, the HMT Academy will be directed by Mark Barry, himself a former Olympian. Mark has focused over many years on the development of younger riders guiding many to the highest levels of the sport. He explains: “I am excited to be part of this new project which will allow Junior riders to develop their potential within a supportive professional environment in preparation for the rigors of elite road racing. The HMT Academy will, I believe, complement well the excellent existing national performance pathways within the different branches of the sportâ€
Rounding off the partnerships the HMT Academy will use to support its athletes in 2015 is a collaboration with Train Sharp, providing the riders with dedicated performance measurement, analysis and coaching services.
Jon Sharples of Train Sharp said: In collaboration with my team of coaches and sport scientist, alongside Sean Yates; we will provide the team with structured, individual plans throughout the year, working towards each rider’s goals. With constant feedback and analysis of training and race data, we will be working towards the ultimate goal of strengthening the HMT Academy with riders that are competing at their full potential.”
