Talking to Madison Genesis Under 23 British Time Trial Champion, Scott Davies of Wales
Interview – Scott Davies

Racing in his home country of Wales, and talking in Welsh to the TV cameras who will no doubt love a home winner, Scott Davies really showed just what a great talent he is. Top 10 in the Worlds last year as a Junior in the road race and now Under 23 British Time Trial Champion.
His time for the one lap he had to do was also quicker than all but the top three did for their first lap of two showing that despite his young age, he is a star of the future on the road. It was his third time trial win of the week!
Scott, talking to his Welsh manager Darren Tudor, is also the ‘nicest’ rider to work with and I would certainly back that up after a few interviews with the Madison-Genesis rider. The Welsh rider will be one of the favourites for the Under 23 title on Sunday on a course where climbing will be a necessary skill for anyone with ambitions to win medals on the day.
“It hasn’t sunk in†he said before adding, “I’m absolutely over the moon. To take a win on this course, in Wales, and against the guys who have raced here, it means the world to me.â€
It was a fair winning margin to Owain Doull (also Welsh) and he put up a good fight says Scott. “Personally, I thought he was the favourite for this. I would have been content with a place on the podium but to step up onto the top step, I’m really happy.â€
“I went for a 11-28 on the back (53-39). I wouldn’t have used anything smaller than that. The 28 came into its own on the climb and I’m not built to push the big big gears. Out of the blocks on the course, it was quite hard to find a rhythm because it dragged for a bit, then dropped down, and up again and it was only the second half of the course, that I found a rhythm and started attacking it.â€
Preparation for the race was mixed for Scott with several crashes including one in a high ranking UCI race in a Norway where he crashed on the third day. “Up until then, it was going well and I had some good climbing legs and was up at the front but crashing is part of cycling and it was good to be able to bounce backâ€.
“The hard work is to come now. I came into this as an underdog but next season and the one after, that’s when the real hard work will come into itâ€.
Team Manager – Roger Hammond, said in a team press release, “That was a fantastic ride by Scott today, showing maturity beyond his years. I’m so pleased for him”.
“This is the reward he immensely deserves for the resolve he has shown to come back from two freak accidents in the beginning of the year. Just six weeks ago he was knocked off by a car on a cycle path, he then just about recovered to be involved in a nasty crash in the Tour De Fjords”.
“Both of which severely hampered his preparations for today’s championships, but Scott’s determination won through. Huge congratulations, he should be very proud.”
Thanks Scott for the chat and good luck on Sunday!
