With only a matter of days to go before the British Time-Trial Championships, Kenilworth’s Matt Clinton (Mike Vaughan Cycles) showed his form by setting two course records at Hinckley CRC’s Challenge weekend.

A warm Saturday afternoon greeted riders for the Wolvey K41/10 near Hinckley, the location of the 1995 National 10 and again in 2015. Having stood for 19 years, Richard Prebble’s course record of 19:55 to win the ’95 Nationals would be hard to beat.

Conditions made for a good, day despite the tough road surface on the course. Setting a time of 20:13 in 2013, Matt knew he could get close to the record with current form. A tailwind on the faster outward leg saw Matt 15 secs above Prebble’s record time at 5 miles, however the tough return leg was still to come. Fading at the start of the return, Matt was able press on in the last couple of miles to finish in 19:43 – some 12s faster than the 19-year old record. This was enough to secure him the win by over one minute from Scott Walker (MG Décor).

Not content with just the one course record, Matt was back again for the second day of the Hinckley CRC Challenge weekend for the K41/25, 25-mile TT. Having broken the 2005 course record of 53:08 in a club event a couple of weeks ago, the record of 52:02 would again be a tough ride.

A warm morning, there was very little wind whatsoever, producing almost perfect conditions. At the end of the first of two laps, Matt was already up on his previous time by 30s, a new record was in sight. Driving hard through the last lap, Matt obliterated his own record to finish in 50:54 (29.6mph) and putting him 2:47 ahead of Scott Walker who again took 2nd place.

Having form at an all-time high, Matt’s aim now is for top-10 at the British TT Championships this coming Thursday in Newport, Wales.
