Conditions were perfect for the 324 competitors who turned out at the NSC last Tuesday night for round six of Team RL360 Isle of Man’s youth league.
Report – RL360 Isle of Man’s Youth League
The highlight of the night was the visit by cycling superstar Victoria Pendleton, who was on the Island with a BBC film crew to record footage of the racing for the One Show, which is covering the arrival of the Commonwealth Games Baton tonight (May 16th) live from the Villa Marina.
Victoria interviewed several members of the Island’s Commonwealth Games cycling team as well as some of the children who were competing in the league. She stayed to the end of the night and was a big hit with everyone who met her.
The riders put on a good show for the cameras, with one of the best performances coming from Florence Griffin in the born 2007 class. The Onchan youngster got into an early break with Cian Howard and Isaac Batty. The trio were never challenged and stayed clear to the finish. Howard surged ahead of his two companions on the final lap to take the win, with Griffin edging out Batty in the sprint for the runners-up spot. Rio Kelly was a solid fourth and Charlie Scarffe got away from Jordan Carter to grab fifth. Relative newcomer Cory Corkhill beat Harry Deering, Ben Davies and Jemma Quayle in the dash to determine the order of the remaining places on the top ten leader board.
There were also some impressive performances from the girls in the novices race where Lilly-Ann Scott and Emily Rewsin rode away from the field to take first and second places respectively. Harry Wilson, Emily Cowell and Max Messenger came in separately to claim third, fourth and fifth, while Tristan Speight pipped Abigail Cullington in the bunch gallop for sixth. Lucy Cartwright, Jayjay Plowman and Alex Montgomery completed the top ten.
In the born 2009 & later age group Eddie Dillon was the clear winner for the sixth week in succession. Callum Christian and Cameron Hounsell gave chase but were unable to make any inroads into Dillon’s lead and had to settle for the minor placings on the podium. Jarno Davidson led the chasers home to secure fourth and Grace Wolstencroft took the girls’ honours in seventh spot. Dylan Bullock was a good tenth in only his second outing of the series.
Myles Le Geyt had to fight off a strong challenge from Alec Sorby before grabbing the victory in the born 2008 category. Ollie Eyres kept Freddie Griffin, T.J.Teare and Oliver Cooper at bay in the battle for third, with top girl Fearne Bregazzi trailing in for seventh. Summer Peters led a seven-strong group of chasers home for eighth, while a little further down the list first-timer Jake Turner did well to finish mid-field in a very respectable 16th position.
After dropping breakaway partner Drystan Sewell on the final lap, Cian Jackson cruised to a comfortable victory in the born 2006 category. Owen Collins maintained station ahead of Zachary Dowson for third and Connor Moughtin led a large group of fourteen riders across the line to bag fifth place. Nicola Quaye, Rebecca Cooil and Lula Thomas were the first three girls in 10th, 13th and 14th places.
A blistering attack on the penultimate lap was enough to give Niall Colquitt the win in the born 2005 race. Harry Kneen held off Mairi Harrison in the sprint for second and Oliver Corkish was too strong for Tyler Annis in the scrap for fourth. Harry Boyle came home alone to round off the top six.
Zac Walker powered to another impressive solo victory in the born 2004 event. Dillon Dowson snatched second from James Devereau and Nathan Slack caught and passed Kiera Prentice in the closing stages to claim fourth. Toby Craig pipped Annabel Corkill and Nathan O’Connor to wrap up the top six.
In the born 2003 & earlier grouping Jonty Bregazzi got the verdict in a five-strong dash for the chequered flag to record his maiden win in the class. Matthew Cooil and Corrin Leeming were second and third, closely followed by top girls Shellan Leeming and Emma Draper. Ramsey’s Tyler Hannay led the rest home in sixth place.
As usual the three racing bikes classes provided an exciting climax to the evening’s entertainment. In the combined under 8’s and under 10’s Zac Walker was the runaway winner, attacking from the gun and time trialing to another impressive solo victory. Niall Colquitt squeezed out Ralf Holden and Dillon Dowson in the bunch sprint for second, with Mairi Harrison earning the girls’ prize in seventh spot. Oliver Corkish spearheaded the second group of riders across the line to pick up 11th place.
In the under 12 racing bikes Charlie Gibson outsprinted a pack of 13 fellow frontrunners to bag the win. James Harrison was second followed by Aaron Lund, Will Corkill and Jonty Bregazzi in third to sixth positions. The leading girl was Charlie Moss in 13th place.
Victoria Pendleton flagged off the under 14’s & under 16’s event. In contrast to the previous week’s humdinger, the race was comparatively quiet. At the finish it was Matthew Draper who took the win from Owen Dudley and Conor Davies. Will Draper was the top U/14 in fourth place and Elizabeth Holden the first girl in eighth place.
