As expected, Great Britain foursome Laura Trott, Katie Archibald, Elinor Barker and Joanna Rowsell won Gold in the Women’s Team Pursuit
GB Women Win Gold
In a final that was a lot closer than expected based on the dominance of the GB girls this season, Great Britain won the team’s first Gold medal of this year’s Worlds. The British quartet of Laura Trott, Katie Archibald, Elinor Barker and Joanna Rowsell qualified fastest by two seconds in blustery conditions at the open sided ‘indoor’ velodrome.
The final saw Canada get off the line quickly but at altitude (1000 metres) that was always a dangerous tactic to play and they paid the price quickly, losing a rider before the GB foursome started to come back. Pacing their effort well in the conditions, Trott, Archibald, Barker and Rowsell hit the front in the final half of the shoot out and crossed the line clear of their rivals time to win the title yet again.

“It’s a tough track to ride but we are over the moon to get the win,” Rowsell told BBC Sport. “At the end, Elinor changed down the straight and I hadn’t actually made it onto the back yet,” said Trott, who, like Rowsell was celebrating a fourth world title in the event. “I was shouting because I thought if she turned any quicker, she’d take me out and then it’d be game over if I take her down. You get lucky sometimes I guess and that’s what happened.”
Barker explained “I just could not hold those wheels. I completely parked it up. It was a split-second decision. I just had to get out of the way and let the girls carry on with it. It was that close that we just would’ve lost it if I’d stayed on the front. The change to 4K really suited the Canadians. They really pushed us”.
Katie Archibald meanwhile said “We’ve been pretty close for a while now, the second round of the World Cup it was quite obvious they’d closed the gap quite a bit, so it’s more exciting.”
Australia won bronze beating Poland.
