Registration has opened for the second edition of the Tour de Mon cycle sportive on Sunday, August 31st 2014.
The Tour de Mon is a non-competitive cycle event to be held on Sunday 31st August 2014, which takes riders around some of the best views and roads the beautiful island of Anglesey has to offer.
The sportive is organised by local events company, Always Aim High Events, and sets off from Newry Beach in Holyhead. This is the second time the Tour de Mon will take place and after the incredibly successful inaugrual event in 2013, where over 1000 riders took part, the 2014 event is set to be unmissable.
The Tour de Mon has 4 choices of route, providing an option for everyone. Riders can choose from the 106-mile Mawr, the 75-mile Canol, the 40-mile Bach and finally the 6.5-mile Tour de Teulu. The Tour de Teulu is a completely free family ride, suitable for all children who are accompanied by parents or adult friends. The 2013 Tour de Teulu attracted over 200 local family riders and it is expected that the 2014 ride will be even more popular.
One of the biggest highlights of the Tour de Mon will once again be the Flying Mile or ‘Milltir Mellten’ as it’s known locally. The Flying Mile gives cyclists the opportunity to race against the clock for a perfectly straight, uninterrupted mile along the runway at RAF Valley. After the success of the 2013 event the Flying Mile is once again supported by the staff at the prestigious RAF base – who are all looking forward to being a part of the Tour de Mon.
Always Aim High Events will once again be working very closely with the local community to make sure that the Tour de Mon is a day to be enjoyed by everyone. At the last event AAHE donated thousands of pounds to local charities and community groups in return for their support and time marshaling at the sportive as well as employing the services of numerous local businesses. This initiative is a fantastic way of ensuring that the Tour de Mon is not only a great day out but it is beneficial to the local economy and community as a whole.
Nigel Kendrick, Director of Always Aim High Events is looking forward to the 2014 Tour de Mon and is working hard to get more cyclists, local residents and community groups involved with the sportive than ever before.
“The 2013 Tour de Mon was a tremendous success. The event attracted more people than we ever imagined and the reviews and feedback we received were fantastic. I put the success of the sportive down to the fact that Anglesey is a terrific place to go cycling, the high levels of dedication we put into organising an event and the way the whole community got on board and supported the Tour. The event village at Newry Beach was filled with hundreds of cyclists, supporters and local residents and the streets were crammed with countless people cheering the cyclists on their way.
We intend to build on these successes to make the 2014 Tour de Mon even bigger and better. Over 1000 people took part in 2013 and we are aiming to exceed this number next year. I live locally on the Island, and I am so proud to be able to show this gorgeous area off to all the participants as well as the countless spectators they will bring with them, many of whom will have never visited the area before.
Additionally, as well as attracting cyclists and junior riders to Newry Beach we also want to get as many members of the local community involved as possible. We will not just be organising a fantastic cycle sportive but we will also turn Newry Beach into a festival of cycling with live music, entertainment and other attractions that the whole family can enjoy.
So make sure you put the Tour de Mon on Sunday 31st August 2014 in your diary because it’s going to be a fabulous day out for everyone.â€
