Nikki Harris was third in the first round of the Women’s World Cyclo-Cross Cup in Valkenburg (Holland) & Ian Field 19th in the Mens race
World Champion Marianne Vos unsurprisingly dominated the first round. The legend in women’s cycling opened up a gap on the rest very quickly in the mud and behind her there was a five way battle for the other podium spots including two Brits, Nikki Harris and Helen Wyman.

American Katherine Compton attacked them on the second lap, and whilst the gap to Harris was less then 20 seconds, the Trek rider looked solid. The battle for third though was closer with Harris not going clear until the penultimate lap, distancing French rider Ferrier-Bruneau first and then fellow Brit and European Champion Helen Wyman by 12 seconds.

There was a tenuous link to Britain in the Mens race winner as Lucy Garner’s boyfriend Lars Van Der Haar (above) of Holland won that race to make it a double for the host nation in their home world cup. There was also a great ride by Ian Field of Hargroves Cycles who in finishing 19th, showing great determination against the worlds best in ‘cross. It was a ride that was widely praised by those in the sport.
