Matt Brottrill’s 25 record attempt scuppered by the weather in South Wales but his winning run continues

Sunday afternoon saw 240 riders from around the country take part in the Port Talbot Wheelers 25 mile time trial on a Welsh course that is renowned for producing fast time’s with the fast ascent from the village of Gleaneth to Neth.
The out and back circuit, on the fast roads would be a test of speed, pace and judgement over the 25 miles. For the Sunday event, there had been a lot of talk if the competition record of 45:46 held by Micheal Hutchinson, could be broken. The standard of the field was the class of any National championship including newly crowned National circuit time trial champion Matthew Bottrill (www.drag2zero.com), multi national champion and Competition record holder Michael Hutchinson (In Gear-Quickfit-Trainsharp) and a strong contingent of riders from Ireland including European U23 Ryan Mullen (Team IG Sigmas Sport).
International riders Conor Dunne (VL Technics) & Marcus Christie (Foyle cc) joined Ryan to battle it out for selection for the World Time trial championships to be held in Florence Italy in the coming weeks. The battle for the race was going to be one of the most hotly contested this season.
It was a mix bag of weather for all the riders taking part. The hot conditions which have been hitting the UK, gave way to cold temperatures, rain storms and gusts of winds. The race got underway, with the first rider leaving at 9am while the battle of the big guns started some three hours later. With the standard being set by Super Veteran, Rob Pears Bath CC with 48:21 (www.drag2zero.com), Jeff Jones was close in 48:24.
Then the young guns hit the road with Irish riders Conor Dunne (VL Technics) finishing in 47:18 & Marcus Christie (Foyle cc) lighting up the roads with 46:41. Mullen of Team IG Sigmas Sport was next and on a mission to take his place on the Irish team.
Mullen, left the starting area like a man focused on being fastest and was soon setting the fastest time. Bottrill left the start next and the newly crowned National British Circuit time trial was soon into his stride.
At the first time check at 10 miles, Bottrill was 10 secs down on Mullen as the youngster was flying and setting a very rapid pace! Hutchinson then came through, another 10 secs down on Bottrill and with the remaining 15 miles to play with, it was going to be a very interesting battle!
Mullen, at just 19 years of age, did not disappoint hitting the finish line in a very rapid 46:36! Amazing considering his age and the fastest time ever set by a rider of that age. Bottrill received a time check from his team helper and good friend Peter Lavine and knowing he was down on Mullen, Bottrill upped the pace. Into his best aero position he set about the task of over turning that deficit and having a crack at the 45:46 competition record.
Riding to a plan set by his coach Bob Tobin of cyclingpowermeters.com, he kept lifting the pace all the way and was on for the record. Needing a speed of 32.8mph to break the record, Bottrill was using every inch of power he had in his body and adopting his best aero position with the record almost within his grasp. All the way to 23 miles things were going well and then the light rain gave away to heavy rains storms and high gust of winds.
Not one for giving in, Bottrill upped his watts to breaking point but needing to average 30mph for the final two miles, his effort was still not enough to break the record. It was enough to set the fastest time in a rapid 46:13, just two seconds short of his personal best! Meanwhile Hutchinson was battling the worst of the conditions, but was still trying his hardest to make the podium, but it was too late and the weather was just to much!
At the finish we caught up with an exhausted Bottrill, and asked about his winning ride, he said “That was a really hard day. I had a schedule set by my coach Bob Tobin who I spoke to on the way to the race and knew that with the weather conditions, it was going to be a big ask to get the record.”
“I had the form but you need everything to just to be right to get the record. It’s only 27 secs away but at that kind of speed its 0.3mph. I guess I will have to come back next season and have a go!”
