The sun was out in full force for the Sportscover/Bioracer Evening Road Race at Pickburn on a triangular 2.9km circuit with fifty eight riders signing on. It could’ve been a kermesse in Belgium, however it was an evening road race parallel to the A1 near to the historic Brodsworth Hall in Pickburn South Yorkshire.

The scene was set for the third and fourth cats to gain some valuable late season licence points and battle it out for a good prize list for the top ten. Seventeen laps up a short but steep climb was the menu for the night and it didn’t disappoint with seventeen out of the fifty three starters dropping by the wayside after the first ten laps.

It was an interesting tight circuit with sprints out of every corner. Certainly a course for the fittest and the strongest. A couple of moves went early on with the odd rider trying to break away but they came to no avail. With six laps remaining, experienced rider Paul Caswell (Harrogate Nova) jumped clear and soon had a fifteen second gap on the main bunch.

A few riders tried to bridge the gap and an join him but he stretched his lead to twenty seconds, then as we approached the run in to the finish line with two laps to go, Paul had a bit of good fortune as he made the corner however the bunch didn’t due to a slow moving combine harvester negotiating the bend. This gave him breathing space whilst the other riders got through. It was one of those riding incidents you either benefit from or not as the race gets halted and restarted.

Paul powered his way to a well deserved win followed by the bunch with Jamie Harper (Sheffrec CC) taking the bunch sprint closely followed by Anthony Richardson RAF. It was good to see the up and coming Junior members of Team Sportscover/Bioracer putting something back into the sport with expert marshalling and flag waving duties, they controlled the traffic well and were smiling at all the motorists, they even helped out with the judging. Sportscover leading the way by example so the other members of BBM revolution could ride the event. A credit to Ashley and his band of helpers who made it a superb event on the night, nicely rounded off by a soft drink at the Pickburn Arms on the course.

Certainly an event to enter next year. We’ll just have to try to avoid the harvesters!
