USA Pro Challenge: Josh Edmondson stars in long break

First year pro Josh Edmondson on the attack for team Sky on the third stage of the USA Pro Challenge but it was Peter Sagan who was celebrating with his second victory in the race

Stage 3 of the USA Pro Challenge on Wednesday saw the riders race 106 miles across two KOMs before arriving in Steamboat Springs with the first climb of Swan Mountain after only seven miles racing. Four riders went off the front at the top of the first climb with the peloton’s veteran Jens Voigt (Radioshack/Leopard-Trek) leading the charge along with Josh Edmondson.

The five riders had seen their lead stretch to over five minutes as they commenced the long drag up Rabbit Ear Pass and that prompted Voigt to make one of his trademark digs for victory. Only Edmondson could mount any kind of response once the 41 year had attacked, but after 31km of a determined solo pursuit, the talented neo-pro was eventually caught as the bunch honed in on their primary target. The German veteran was also reeled in in the last 2.8km, just seconds before a crash caused a sizeable split in the bunch.

SKY DS Dan Hunt said of the move, “It was good to see him try to drag Jens back in the last 50km, and he got within a minute of doing so before the road flattened out and Jens saw his advantage grow out again. He’ll have learnt from today though and that’ll bode well for the future.”

Jens Voigt meanwhile said “I saw the group falling apart, everyone riding with different interests and tactics. I think the Cannondale rider got orders from his team car to stop pulling. So with only five riders in the break, if you lose one-fifth of your work force, that’s a big deal. I decided an attack would be the best defense. I had it in mind this morning that this would be a good stage for me. I told the boys in the team meeting what I had in mind and that I was up for it. From the profile I thought maybe the breakaway could survive. So I made sure I was in the break. We worked well together for quite awhile.

Around 50km, Voigt attacked not once, but twice and went clear telling his legs in no uncertain terms that they definitely needed to shut up! Voigt pedaled away from the break chased by Edmondson (pictured above). With still an hour of racing to go, Voigt, 41, had his work cut out but is no stranger to pain and suffering. Voigt put his head down and went right to work, keeping ahead of the hard-charging peloton. But the sprinters’ teams were determined to have their day and went to the front to reel him back, finally absorbing him into the peloton with less than 3k to go, ending a glorious time off the front for a fan-favorite in America.

Jens Voigt said of being caught, “I was angry and disappointed to be caught. I thought it might work out today, so I was a little bit mad with the world in general. But then I heard about the crash so I figured being in a crash was worse than being caught so oh, well. It didn’t work but I gave it a go. I realized at about 5 or 6k to go that the gap was coming down too fast, I was pretty sure I didn’t have enough time. I saw it coming.”

Asked if he would be ready to go again in a few days, Voigt answered: “Next month I’m going to be 42 – give me some rest here; I’m an old man! Tomorrow is a hard day and probably when the GC will be decided, so I will just hang on, then the TT, so after that we will look at things and go again.”

There was no change in the race lead with Lachlan Morton (Garmin-Sharp) still in the yellow jersey. For his efforts, Jens was awarded the jersey for the most aggressive rider.

Thursday’s stage is arguably the toughest of the race and features a number of short, sharp ascents including the fearsome Bachelors Gulch. Hunt believes the break will have a better chance of staying clear on the fourth day of action so is expecting his riders cover the early moves once again. “We don’t have anyone who’s a threat on the GC now so any one of our riders could potentially make it into the break. That’s what we’ll aim to do and then we’ll try to be as active as possible and see how things pan out.”
