Brilliant weather greeted the best ever field for the older category riders in the LVRC races in beautiful Warwickshire
![]() |
Event organiser Mick Ives designed a really tough course consisting of two seperate circuits plus start and finish legs in some of Warwickshires most beautiful countryside
Many climbs were included, the biggest being Edge Hill, which came after only 7 miles, and really sorted out the fields. Over 25 marshalls were provided by the promoting Team, M.I.Racing.
With race service for all three events including escort motor cycles and a headquarters with excellent facilities, Moreton College at Moreton Morrell near Warwick. The same venue Team Jewson—M.I.Racing use to promote their Cyclo Cross events.
Race 1 for riders 65-69 years, 40 miles.
Andy Hicks and Dick Naylor had a small lead over the next group with Hicks dropping Naylor up the finishing hill. Geoff Wiles, former British Professional Road Champion with Holdsworth, and last years winner, won the sprint for the Bronze medal, from the two promoting team riders Allen and Mitchell.
1. Andy Hickes –South Western R.C.
2. Dick Naylor—Abelia S.F.A. Race Team
3.—Geoff Wiles—Abelia S.F.A. Race Team
4. Mick Allen—Team Jewson—M.I.Racing—Thule—Polypipe
5. Barrie Mitchell—Team Jewson—M.I.Racing—Thule—Polypipe
Race 2 for riders 70-74 yrs-, 40 miles
Ginley and Woodings broke clear of the leading group at the start of 2nd circuit and were then caught and passed by a “flying“ Brian Sunter with approx 10 miles to go. Sunter used his vast Time Trial experience to stay clear, and win his first ever LVRC National title while Ginley outsprinted Woodings again for the silver Medal.(Ginley won the recent Circuit Nat Champs by out sprinting Woodings).
1. Brian Sunter—Condor R.C.
2. John Ginley—Condor R.C.
3. Derrick Woodings—Team Jewson—M.I.Racing—Thule—Polypipe
4. Jack Wright—Middridge C.R.T.
5. Paul Priestly—Condor R.C.
Championship for riders 75 and over
The championship for riders 75 and over was won by the ever green Jack Watson (Team Jewson-M.I.Racing—Thule—Polypipe) who was the only rider in this age group to stay with the leading 70-74 group and won his championship by a massive 10 minutes from Derek Moyles (A5 Rangers) and John Dowell (CC Portuence).
Race 3 – Championship for riders 60-64, 58 miles
This event was really sorted out in the first 7 miles, when Martin Russell, Alan Kemp and Mick Day led over Edge Hill, closely followed by Ray Robinson and Don Parry,
who bridged up to the three leaders once over the summit. From then on they all rode through and off and slowly pulled away from a large chasing group, which got smaller by the finish and finished over 5 mins behind the winner
With 25 miles left to race, Martin Russell (Team Jewson—M.I.Racing) suffered a front wheel puncture and rode it for several miles before getting a spare. It took a
long while changing wheels for some reason and what followed was a five mile chase to get back to the leaders. With 10 miles to go, Parry starting feeling the effects of not racing and training for 3 weeks due to a shoulder injury and with just 3 miles left, he finally cracked as Russell and Kemp put on the pressure up Compton Verny climb.
Kemp, the reigning champion, always looked in control and despite Russell making several other attacks, all were snuffed out by a powerful looking Kemp. On the up hill finish, Kemp (Weaver Valley), led out with just 150 yds to go and there was nothing Mick Day (Paul Milnes Cycles) could do and Ray Robinson (Team Jewson MIRacing)
picked up the bronze with team mate Martin Russell a brilliant 4th.
Don Parry (Team Corley) came in 1 min 32 secs down (5th) and Dave Brown (LVRC) led home the chase group at 5 mins 10 secs. Poor old Alan Ramsey had a bad day at the office. He suffered on the Edge Hill climb and was in the last group all day, then 2 miles from the finished touched wheels and hit the deck hard, coming home 12 mins 20 secs down.
Organiser Mick Ives, would like to say a very big thanks to C.N.P. for supporting the Championships, and to all the hard working Marshalls Officials Drivers etc ,
many working both morning and afternoon.
