Team Sky with Bradley Wiggins powered to victory in the team time trial at the Giro del Trentino to seal stage 1b in emphatic style
The eight-man squad of Dario Cataldo, Joe Dombrowski, Peter Kennaugh, Christian Knees, Danny Pate, Kanstantsin Siutsou, Sir Bradley Wiggins and Xabier Zandio recorded a blistering time of 15 minutes and 20 seconds in Lienz to beat their nearest rivals, Astana, by 13 seconds.
The result saw team leader Wiggins take time out of a number of key rivals over the 14.1-kilometre course as Team Sky registered their first team time trial victory since the Tour of Qatar in 2010. Vincenzo Nibali (Astana) relinquished 13 seconds to Wiggins while Lampre-Merida rounded out the podium places on the day, a further three seconds back.

Yet after a morning stage which saw a breakaway prosper the overall lead shifted onto the young shoulders of 19-year-old Josef Cerny (CCC Polsat). The Czech rider finished second on the morning stage but was able to overhaul lunchtime leader Maxime Bouet by virtue of his squad besting AG2R-La Mondiale by 13 seconds.
The result sees seven of the eight Team Sky riders sit 6:05 behind heading into the mountains. “The most important thing – commented Wiggins – is that I felt good. I feel ok and confident. Tomorrow’s test to Vetriolo will be really tough, but we are here to see where we can get, hopefully as high as possible.â€
Team NetApp – Endura meanwhile just missed out on a podium spot in the team time trial at the Giro del Trentino. The team, with North West rider Jonny McEvoy, completed the 14-km course in a time of 15:44. They had just a 24-second deficit behind the winners, Team Sky, who claimed victory over the Astana and Lampre teams. Once again, Team NetApp – Endura demonstrated its strengths in this discipline in an impressive way, claiming the top spot among the ProContinental teams.
The second day marks what is already the pinnacle stage from Sillian to Vetriolo Terme. A tough 225-km profile awaits the riders. First, the highest point on the tour, Passo Lavazé, has to be traversed before heading into the final part of the stage, which also includes a category one mountain. There, the riders will have to cover 15 kilometers with an average incline of 7.6%.
Result
1. Team Sky 15:20
2. Astana +13
3. Lampre-Merida +16
4. NetApp-Endura +24
