Euskaltel-Euskadi signs the British winner of the Vuelta al Bidasoa — Louis Sutton who will ride in orange for the next two seasons. Louis Sutton from St Albans, England, has ridden this 2024 and the previous one for the French team AVC Aix-en-Provence and the two previous ones for the Netllar Telecom-Ale / Brocar-Ale team, with whom he has competed in some races on the Basque calendar.
In 2024, he won the Vuelta al Bidasoa, second in the stages of Ibardin and Irún, as well as a stage in the Volta a Castelló, and certified his talent with a second place in a stage of the Carrera de la Paz and a third on a stage of the Tour de l’Avenir where he was also key rider in the final victory of his teammate Joseph Blackmore.
The confirmation of his quality was reflected in the Tour of Britain, sixth with two stages to go, in the wake of riders such as Remco Evenepoel and Julian Alaphilippe, until he retired due to a fall, and competed in the World Championship in Zurich with the British team. Last year, he already won a stage in Bidasoa, Castellón and the Circuit Montañés.
Louis Sutton: “It means a lot to be joining Euskaltel-Euskadi. I have ridden a lot in the Basque Country and have loved every race I have done. The atmosphere and enthusiasm that the fans show at every race is unseen anywhere else. I am looking forward to starting to race in orange, in the territory I love to do it the most, and for the Basque fans to be able to enjoy my performances.”
“Also, racing with Euskaltel Euskadi gives me the opportunity to compete at the highest level. In doing so, this will really accelerate my development to give my best performance to try and win races with the team. I have yet to define myself as a rider, I have performed well on difficult courses with climbs, I like to be aggressive, so I hope to show that with the team in the future.”
“My first two years at U23 were with the Spanish amateur team Netllar Ale / Brocar Ale before moving to AVC Aix En Provence, a French First Division team to compete in my last two years at U23. I feel like I’ve learned a lot on both teams and I’m satisfied because it’s been four years in this category to make sure I’m ready to take a step forward, especially this year. I’ve had opportunities to compete for the national team in top-level races like the Tour de l’Avenir, the World Championships and the Tour of Britain, which gave me enough confidence to know that I’m ready to perform at the highest level.”
Jorge Azanza, Euskaltel-Euskadi’s sports manager: “Sutton is an under-23 who has already been standing out since last year, when he won a stage in Bidasoa, and this year he has won the general classification, completing a great season. You only have to look at the finish he has had, in the Tour de l’Avenir and in the Tour of Britain, which shows the quality he has, also selected for the World Championships. And he’s already made the jump to the professional ranks. Therefore, we have a lot of hope and excitement for him because he’s a rider who climbs very well, has top speed, is clever at running and has a good engine. He will bring youth and, above all, quality.”
