Crit Result: PDQ Race Series #4 (Men)

James Phillips winner of the Masters 40+ circuit race at round 4 of the PDQ Race Series at Bath on July 9. Deacon Cutterham of Velo Club Bristol takes the 2024 PDQ Race Series Win while Pronto Bikes clear up the team competition and other prizes!

Round 4 of the Masters Mens Series at PDQ Race Series was again fast and furious. The first attack of the day inevitably had to be a Pronto Bikes team rider and it was one of the Beale brothers on the attack. A break away formed after a few laps that handily contained a member of the each of the main represented teams – Tristan Stevens of PDQ Cycle Coaching Property Elite, James Phillips of Pronto Bikes CC, John Russell of Reflex Racing and Robert Pears of Bath CC.

This group worked well together and it fell to other solo riders to chase. With such strong riders in the break and none of them in contention for the series top 10, they were allowed to get some distance ahead of the bunch. Deacon Cutterham, the series leader, was content to let them go given none of them were rivals for his title.

With a few laps to go 2 further riders managed to escape the bunch, Oliver Brand of Pronto Bikes CC lying 4th in the series and Charles Thibault of Bath CC lying 7th in the series. This duo were working so hard that they looked in danger of catching the 4-rider breakaway. With 2 laps to go Christopher Hill also managed to escape the bunch and got a decent gap on them.

And this was how they all came to the finish, the break just stayed away from the chasing duo and it was James Phillips, winner of rounds 2 and 3, taking the victory ahead of Tristan Stevens, John Russell and Robert Pears. This was enough to secure the medal for best 60-69yrs in the series for Robert Pears. Oliver Brand outsprinted Charles Thibault to take 5th place on the night and snatch the series final podium spot off team mate Nicholas Beale.

Christopher Hill showed his strength as he stayed clear of the bunch riding solo the last 2 laps to take 7th place on the night.

The bunch was led home by Steven Whitehurst, to secure his spot on the podium for 2nd place in the series. He came in a few bike lengths clear of the rest of the bunch. Series leader Deacon Cutterham crossed the line in 11th place to secure the win of the whole series, 11 points clear of Steven Whitehurst in 2nd overall. Pronto Bikes CC top 3 riders took 1st, 5th and 9th on the night, extending their lead in the Clover Maintenance Team Competition and claiming the £100 cash prize. What a finale and what a series! Each year seems to get better and better and we will be back next year for more fast and furious racing!
