Q&A: Callum Watson (Prologue Race Team)

Quiz time with Callum Watson (Prologue Race Team) who will be racing in Spain as a first year Under 23 in 2024

Q&A: Callum Watson (Prologue Race Team)

Q: Overall, how was your season on the bike?
Callum: An up and down year, not really finding any form for the first few months of the year and struggled to finish races. Begun to find my legs in May at the stage race we did in Murcia Vuelta a las Comarcas, before a break from racing for my A levels. The best of my season came in the second half with some top 10s during a trip to Spain to ride for a team in the Basque region to race for a longer period of time.

Q: What was the best result/performance of yours in 2023?
Callum: Tenth at the Otley Chevin classic Town centre, a good team performance too, with 3 of us in the top 10.

Q: What race was the most fun to do in 2023?
Callum: The Vuelta a las Comarcas we did in Murcia in May, the first race abroad with the team, a great experience and a lot learnt. Not just in the race but off the bike to it was a great few days. Not without a minor crash in there too.

Q: If you race abroad, was it better than racing here and if so, what were the big differences?
Callum: I think racing abroad is better than here, purely due to the funding that is able to be put into the organisation of the race with full road closures and much bigger fields. Also, the interest and understanding in bike racing from locals around the circuit make it a better atmosphere throughout the whole race compared to the UK.

Q: What are the key things you learnt in 2023 in racing with the team?
Callum: To stick it out when nothing is going your way. I had my fair share of bad luck this year and previously had I given up on it, I wouldn’t of had the highs I experienced after it.

Q: What was the toughest bike race you did in 2023?
Callum: The final Stage at the Vuelta a las Comarcas (Murcia), going over two significant categorised climbs after three days of intense racing, sticking it out in the front group, was an achievement for me in itself.

Q: When do you get back in the saddle and start training for 2024?
Callum: I’ve been back training for 3/4 weeks now, after 2 weeks off the bike getting back from my time racing in Spain. Looking forward to moving over to Spain for my season in January.

Q: What are your goals for 2024?
Callum: I’ll be racing in Spain for a team based in Mallorca as my first year in Under 23. I’d like to be consistent throughout the year and play my part in the team goal for each race.

Thanks Callum and good luck with the goals in 2024 racing abroad…
