WOMEN: Sheffield Women’s National Circuit Series Grand Prix: Big time racing returned to Sheffield on Wednesday evening with a load of racing from Youth riders to the best riders in the country racing round a new circuit. The Women’s event was very aggressive with lots of attacking until a move by Monica Greenwood and Amy Gornall saw them escape and start to lap riders quickly as they dominated the event with Monica making up for the disappointment in not winning her race on Sunday at the place she was married by outsprinting Amy and getting a great trophy to celebrate the victory.

National Circuit Series Sheffield Grand Prix: Men

There was star studded Men’s field lined up in front of a big crowd in Sheffield that could have been better as I hear there were World Tour riders (and others) who wanted to race their home race but BC said no as they missed the entry closing date. So much for BC doing the best for the sport and instead sticking to the regs with no compromise. The extra entry money I’m sure could have given the organiser more funds to do things with at the event as well. The race though had the likes of Jacob Scott on the start who has been a mega star domestically before he went Pro Conti in Europe with a New Zealand team. Also on the start were some of the ‘A’ listers in the Saint Piran team who have spent much of the season racing UCI events abroad.

A great race was assured and so it was with attacks off the start line as Alec Briggs wasted no time in getting away. That ‘attack’ as soon neutralised but within ten minutes the making of the winning break was soon off the front including local team rider from Cycling Sheffield James Hartley. He’s just returned from a stage race in France and his legs were smashed so he was one of a few that were soon dropped off from the break and the Saint Prian riders put the hammer down and nailed many a rider into the tarmac.

There was soon only five riders left with two from Saint Piran; Harry Birchill, Finn Crockett, Toby Barnes, Jacob Scott and series leader Ben Chilton (Ribble Collective). They continued lap riders over and over and then finally, they got their chance to sprint it out where Finn Crockett’s face was one of joy and elation as he crossed the line. There was plenty of that joy on the podium
