News: Tour of Britain Host Cities

The Tour of Britain, which returns for its 19th edition in September, will feature city centre finishes, a return to popular locations and brand-new host venues across its eight days.

Wrexham will feature for the first time in eight years, before Beverley, Felixstowe, and Harlow will host their first-ever stage finishes of the UK’s most prestigious cycling event. The 2023 Tour (Sunday 3 – Sunday 10 September) will start in spectacular style in Greater Manchester, return along the way to Nottinghamshire for the stage four finish, before this year’s champion is crowned following a final stage in South Wales.

Today’s announcement coincides with the start of the Cycle Show, the UK’s biggest of its kind, in London, where race ambassador and Grand Tour stage winner Dan Martin will meet fans. The newly-announced details are as follows:

— Stage two Monday 4 September Wrexham finish

— Stage three Tuesday 5 September Beverley finish

— Stage five Thursday 7 September Felixstowe finish

— Stage six Friday 8 September Harlow finish

Now firmly a city on the international sporting map, largely thanks to its re-energised football team, Wrexham will make a welcome return to the Tour of Britain on Monday 4 September. It last featured when it co-hosted the race’s Grand Départ in 2015. Italian sprinter and former European champion Elia Viviani sprinted to victory that day, ahead of home favourite Mark Cavendish, in front of an estimated crowd of 10,000 spectators.

The East Riding of Yorkshire market town of Beverley will then host the stage three finish on Tuesday 5 September. Over 100 of the world’s leading riders will head there almost 15 years to the day since the Tour last passed through the town during a stage from Hull to Dalby Forest. This will mark Beverley’s first appearance as a Tour of Britain stage host, although it previously featured as a Tour de Yorkshire start venue in 2016 and 2018.

After day four of the race concludes in Nottinghamshire, a seaside trip awaits over 100 of the world’s best cyclists when Felixstowe marks the finishing point of stage five. This stage will weave through Babergh and Mid Suffolk, the heart of the Suffolk countryside, before culminating along the county’s coastline in the shadows of Felixstowe’s pier and world-famous port on Thursday 7 September.

Felixstowe has never previously welcomed the Tour, however its sister race – the Women’s Tour – dramatically culminated there in 2021, when newly-crowned world champion Elisa Balsamo claimed an emotional victory in the famous rainbow jersey. The Tour will then become the biggest sporting event to ever take place in Harlow when stage six of the race finishes there on Friday 8 September.

Harlow has never previously welcomed the Tour of Britain, but has also hosted a stage of the Women’s Tour. Dutch star Lorena Wiebes, the world’s fastest female sprinter, claimed an unforgettable victory that day, her first of three in the 2022 edition. Organisers have previously announced that the 2023 race will culminate in South Wales on Sunday 10 September as part of a long-term agreement signed last year with the Welsh Government.
