Cat Ferguson, Emma Matthews, Denholm Edwards and Alex Beldon winners at round 1 of the Spatzwear Rayner Spring Series on February 6 at Brownlee centre, Leeds
Report/Result: Spatzwear Rayner Spring Series No 1
The Yorkshire circuit season got under way this weekend with the Spatzwear spring series at the Brownlee centre, Leeds under the watchful eye of prolific organiser, Richard Hollis, and with funds going to the Dave Rayner Fund. Riders would face difficult conditions through the day which included high winds, rain, snow, hale and at times, sunshine!
Alex Beldon solos to victory in the E/1/2/3
Kicking off the day with the youth races were the girls (Under 16/14). After just 2 laps, Cat Ferguson (Storey racing) and Imogen Wolff (Shibden CC) took off from the field and were never to be seen again. Working well, the pair pulled out a 2 min lead with Cat taking the sprint. Megan Lloyd (Harry Middleton CC) came in a small group behind for 3rd place. Phoebe Taylor (Eastlands velo) finished in the main bunch to take the under 14 girls race from Maia Howell (Matlock CC) and Tilly Hofert (Clifton)
The women`s E/1/2/3 and 3-4 races had to be amalgamated due to a lack of entries within the senior race, and this quickly meant the field split into the strong headwind up the short drag. Four escaped with Emma Matthews (Sowerby Sunday Club). Erin Avil (Storey Racing), Lauren Robinson (Moonglu) and Kirstie Drakeford (Hornsea Peloton). Smaller groups formed behind, but again the lead went out to 2 minutes. As the race neared its end, a series of attacks saw Drakeford distanced, then on the final lap Avil also lost touch, leaving Matthews to take the win from Robinson.
The boys under 16 race was likely the most attacking of the day. Again, high winds played its part on the hardest part of the circuit and after a number of attempts, Oliver Dawson (RTD-Js cycleshack) finally broke the string alone and escaped for a good number of laps, at one point having a good 40 secs gap. This animated the race with Denholm Edwards (Harrogate Nova), Daniel Kemp (Clifton CC), Joe Cosgrove (Dolan) and Patrick Casey (East Bfd) attacking and working together well. Just missing out were Joe Cosgrove (Otley CC), Matthew Peace (Otley CC) and Joel Hurt (Derwentside CC) but chasing hard in front of the remainder of the bunch. Dawson was eventually caught by the foursome and they remained clear to the end. Despite individual attacks, the sprint resulted in a clear winner with Edwards taking the win from Dawson and Kemp.
The final race of the day was the E1/2/3 men. A number of individual attacks came to nothing with a closely watching bunch, but after 8 laps, year one juniors Alex Beldon (Fensham Howes-MAS design) and Matthew Ellmore (Otley CC) attacked into the wind and quickly gained a small gap. The pair worked together for 2 laps before Ellmore was unable to follow Beldon`s wheel and the pair battled around the track individually with a strong chasing bunch. Oliver Peace (Tofauti Everyone Active), another new junior rider and having already ridden the previous race, along with Cai Curtis Roberts (Rhyl CC) and Isaac Lawrence (Brother UK-Orientation market) were all very animated but unable to close the gap to Beldon whos lead went out to over 30 second and the bunch being policed by his team mate Matthew Brennan.
Beldon was able to hold onto his gap for his first senior victory, with team mate Brennan, who already has 2 victories to his name this season, outsprinting Lawrence.
Unfortunately the Mens 3-4 race had to be abandoned mid race due to the weather – the other results will still follow once confirmed by the commissaire.
