The rider taking the quiz today is Bexy Dew (a doctor no less) who will be racing in the colours of Pro-Noctis-Rotor-RedchilliBikes-Heidi Kjeldsen in 2022 and started racing in 2018
Q&A: Bexy Dew
Bexy Dew, 28, and from Hampshire, has been racing since 2018. Bexy is a Reservist in the British Army and the Army hold their own road race series every year. Bexy entered this as a starting point in 2018, fell in love with racing very quickly and entered her first British Cycling race soon after. Bexy is a doctor and now mixes her racing and training between shifts.
Q: How difficult was 2020 with little racing or did it give you time to reset, refresh and focus on 2021?
Bexy: I went into 2020 excited to experience National level racing for the first time so not have this opportunity I was obviously disappointed. However, I used the opportunity to start racing on Zwift and to try Hill Climbing. I had a successful season in both.
I won the Army Championships on Zwift, won the World Team Time Trial Championships with Socks4Watts and signed for Canyon Esports Elite Women’s Team at the end of the year. I also had great fun trying hill climbing and won the Western Hill Climb Series and finished 5th at the National Hill Climb Championships. All of these achievements definitely boosted my motivation and confidence and left me more determined heading into 2021. I feel 2020 helped me to a far more successful 2021.
Q: What was the highlight of your racing in 2021?
Bexy: I stepped up to the National Road Race Series for the first time which I thoroughly enjoyed. Riding alongside women I had always admired and looked up to was great. I have been very fortunate to sign with Pro-Noctis at the end of the season. It was a pleasure to celebrate the team’s success with them after the National Criterium Championships and I look forward to more of the same with them next year.
Q: What race in your career is the one that still gives you the biggest buzz?
Bexy: The atmosphere at some of the Criteriums this year have been outstanding. Racing Otley and seeing the Beefeaters and a dancing dinosaur has to be up there as a ‘pinch me’ moment.
Q: Were there learning moments in 2021 races and if so, what were they?
Bexy: I had an unfortunate end to my season with two punctures (first ever race puncture followed by another at the National Championships). I think there was little I could have done about puncture twice – riding new tyres with new tubeless set up, however my puncture at Curlew Cup may have been prevented by a bit more maintenance and preparation on my part and changing that rear tyre before the race!
Q: What’s the furthest you have travelled for a bike race in 2021?
Bexy: I originate from Cornwall so anything North of Bristol is still ‘North’ in my mind … There was definitely a lot of racing ‘up North’ this year so felt like I was always travelling! The Tour Series in Scotland would have to be the furthest I travelled.
Q: During a race, is there a lot of team talk between you and teammates on what to do in certain situations during an ever changing race?
Bexy: This is something I’m really looking forward to being able to do in races in 2022 and is something that really attracted me to Pro-Noctis seeing their communication and team work.
Q: Do you go into a race nervous or intimated by other riders or do you have the confidence to hold you own?
Bexy: I know my confidence grew throughout the season and I’m hoping to continue this positive trend into 2022.
Q: How much training (hours and/or days) do you do in a given week in winter and summer when you are racing?
Bexy: I work as a doctor so my training is largely dictated by my shifts. Balancing my busy shift pattern with getting enough rest is key and my coach gives me invaluable help with this.
Q: Do you train on a training bike or the race bike …
Bexy: Training bike in winter and race bike throughout the season. I am lucky to have my Canyon Esports indoor setup so my Canyon remains indoors set up on the turbo all year round.
Q: Do you cross train at all, running, swimming, gym or other disciplines like MTB
Bexy: I am fortunate to be part of the Army Elite Sports Program and receive Strength and Conditioning Sessions at Solent University so gym work features consistently in my training.
Q: Where is your favourite training ride?
Bexy: Favourite training ride ever would be in Northern Thailand. I’ve been lucky to ride there over two winters previously. At home, I love riding in the New Forest amongst the ponies and donkeys and in the hills of the South Downs.
Q: What type of race suits you best?
Bexy: I love to climb so an undulating course with a good climb is my favourite.
Q: What are goals for 2022
Bexy: To have fun, enjoy the opportunity and contribute to the success of the team.
