Tom Pidcock finished third in the Ethias Cross in Essen on Tuesday (today), but it was still a very different race to the World Cup in Namur. There, he also finished third after a spectacular effort against two of the worlds best on the road and in cyclocross.

The young Yorkshire rider has learned his lessons from the Citadelcross. “I learned a lot from my defeat in Namur” says Tom Pidcock. “After the weekend, I was a bit irritated. I think I had more to offer on the last lap. I thought about winning, but if I had won I wouldn’t have learned anything. Now I have learned something because I lost.”

“I should have had more confidence in the final lap ”, he says. “I have to fight those guys now, and not look up to them. Just like them, I will go until it goes, but with more confidence, I might have finished second. ”

On the respect from Van der Poel and Van Aert, Pidcock says “they’ve never worked together before, but when I’m in the front they’ll do it to get me back,” he laughs. “That is an honour. I also spoke with Wout during the World Championship road race in Imola. That shows that they respect me. ”

In the Ethias Cross, for a long time he rode in fourth place but due to a flat tyre to Laurens Sweeck, he was able to finish third. “It’s good to get my fourth podium in a row, that’s great. But it was tough today. The course was not great for me and my legs were not great either. That’s why I’m happy to make it to the podium ”, said Tom.
