News: National Series RR Dates for 2021
British Cycling has announced the 24 races that will make up the provisional 2021 National Road Series and National Circuit Series.
Both the men’s and women’s calendars will begin with the Klondike Grand Prix, on Sunday 18 April, while both rounds of the National Circuit Series will begin in Otley on Wednesday 30 June.
While the details are still to be confirmed, it is hoped that a men’s and women’s round of the road series in the South of England, and a men’s and women’s round of the circuit series in the Midlands, will be added to the calendar in the months ahead.
The 2021 season will also see the reintroduction of a separate under-23 competition for men and women, with prize money attached, and an overall winner crowned after the final round of the series.
Unfortunately, the 2021 series will not include a return to the Manx International on the Isle of Man due to the pandemic, however it is planned that the popular three-day event will make a return to the calendar in 2022.
British Cycling Elite Road Racing Manager, Erick Rowsell (above), said: “As we come to the end of what has been an incredibly challenging 2020, I’m absolutely thrilled that we are today able to announce the provisional calendar for 2021. We know that publishing the dates at this time of year is hugely important to teams and riders as they plot out their own plans for the season, and I’d like to express my thanks in particular to all of our race organisers for their ongoing support over recent months.”
“There is clearly a great deal of uncertainty attached to Covid-19 as we head in to 2021, however we remain confident that with the experience we have gained from the return of events in other disciplines over recent months, we will be able to deliver a fantastic series for riders, teams and spectators next year.
“Our national series continue to provide a fantastic platform for talented young riders, as the recent World Tour successes of Anna Henderson, Matt Holmes, Hugh Carthy and others all attest to. It also provides fans of our sport with a unique opportunity to watch the country’s best riders right on their doorstep, and as an organisation, we are committed to further developing the series in the years ahead.”
In other news, the rumour is that road racing will return in some form, test events etc, in March of 2021 providing such sport is allowed at that time. Nothing however is written in stone.
