News: Cyclone Festival of Cycling

2020 Event Re-Scheduled For September 25-27 September

The 2020 Cyclone Festival of Cycling has been re-scheduled for Friday 25th to Sunday 27th of September and will bring its usual combination of six public cycling events and two elite races to the North East of England. The decision to run the festival was taken following advice from the Government and British Cycling indicating that organised cycling events will be able to resume in late summer and early autumn.

The Cyclone’s organising team are now putting plans in place to run the festival in a way that keeps participants, organising staff and local residents safe. They are in constant touch with British Cycling, who sanction and insure the events, Newcastle Falcons, who provide the one major venue of the festival and local authorities, who oversee the locations visited by the Festival.

Cyclone Festival Organiser, Peter Harrison said: “Additional health and safety measures will be taken, as recommended by the Government, British Cycling and local authorities and in consultation with the Festival’s various venue providers. The safety of everyone involved will be paramount throughout.”

“We will only run the festival if all interested parties agree that it can be done and we’re determined to make the event happen if it’s possible to do so. With so many events cancelled this year and many charities facing financial problems, the Cyclone is also great chance to get out and have a big day on your bike whilst also fund-raising for a good cause!”

The Races

Beaumont Trophy Event Info: The 2020 Beaumont Trophy will be on the afternoon of Sunday 27th September. The race will be a 128km National B race, open to Elite and 1st and 2nd Category riders. The Course will be six laps of a 21km circuit, with the race HQ, start and finish all in or close to the village of Stamfordham. The race will start and finish on Stamfordham Heugh in order to minimise the number of spectators in the Village of Stamfordham,

Curlew Cup Event Info: The race will be a 85km and open to Elite and 1st, 2nd and 3rd Category senior and junior riders. The Course will be four laps of a 21km circuit, with the race HQ, start and finish all in or close to the village of Stamfordham. The race will start and finish on Stamfordham Heugh in order to minimise the number of spectators in the Village of Stamfordham,

The Public Events

The 2020 Cyclone Festival of Cycling includes six public rides, from 10 miles to 108 miles in length and suitable for cyclists of all ages and abilities. Tyne Bridges Family/Fun Rides: The Festival opens with the Tyne 6 Bridges family rides on Friday evening, 25th September. Both routes (10 & 15 miles) take riders along a flat, traffic-free route by the river Tyne, under and over the rover’s iconic bridges and past some of the most historic riverside sites in the UK. These rides are suitable for cyclists of all ages and abilities.

The Cyclone Challenge Rides: These rides take place on Saturday 26th September and offer routes of 34, 65, 93 and 108 miles. Beautiful Northumberland is explored along minor roads and lanes, with testing climbs being off-set against matchless views.
