New Mens & Women’s Team
Norwood Paragon has teamed up with Reigate based bike shop Maison du Velo to launch 1904 Race Team, recruiting nineteen riders split across men’s and women’s squads. The creation aims to bridge the gap between traditional cycling clubs, which promote grassroots racing such as Paragon’s annual Les Ingman road race, and the increasingly popular small team start-ups, which frequently attract and develop young talent.
The 1904 founded cycling club has hosted four Olympic cyclists in its history, and the new outfit has ambitious targets, with experienced Cat 1 riders within the mix as well as strong Junior and Under 23 members. Team Manager Austyn Tusler will act as a Director Sportif, managing the race schedule and rider selection for target races, whilst day-to-day decisions will be made by Maison du Velo’s Tim Bishop on the men’s side and Michelle Arthurs-Brennan on the women’s.
Riders will wear kit produced by Maison du Velo’s in-house brand, Hoste, the design of which was voted for by the team members themselves. They’ll also benefit from bike fitting and mechanical support at the shop which acts as a club house for both Norwood Paragon and 1904RT going forwards. The eight strong women’s team will target the Women’s Team Series, as well as several of British Cycling’s National Series events such Lincoln GP and the Rutland Cicle Classic.

Key signings include former World Championship medalist rower, Mathilde Pauls who moves from Sigmasports Threo Women’s Race Team and Under 23 South East, Central and Eastern champion Anna Marie-Hughes. The men’s team will target Surrey League races, as well as National B events. The team gains from the experience of former GB rider Andy Critchlow, now in his 40s and enjoying a comeback. On the other end of the scale, is Jamie Pullen – the junior rider who finished tenth overall in the national youth rankings this year, amassing 12 wins over the season.
Joining the squad from Norwood Paragon is Chris Moores, the former 1st category rider who claimed a National Championship jersey in the paracycling crit race in 2018. Commenting on the launch, Norwood Paragon’s chairman Jon Masters said: “Our club has a rich history of supporting Olympic and international level riders. This new venture aims to future proof the club, ensuring we remain attractive to the younger generation and competitive both on the women’s and men’s circuit.”
Tom Hough, Maison de Velo’s owner, said: “We opened in Reigate five years ago and have had riders scaling the hills in Surrey and Kent wearing our jersey ever since, whilst also acting as a meeting point for clubs across the county, including Norwood Paragon. What we can’t offer is the pathway to racing success available at a traditional club with a 100-year history and host of experienced veteran racers. This joint venture enables us to be a part of a clear pathway which develops aspiring talent and supports the local race scene.”
