A night for winners to double up as Anna Henderson and Harry Tanfield, winners in Aberystwyth, repeated the victory in Stevenage – Canyon Eisberg now lead team classification after two team victories on the night
Tour Series: Stevenage
The Wizard Harry Tanfield weaved his magic at Stevenage, helping his team to victory in the Team Time Trial and the powering to a solo win in the race to head up another Canyon Eisberg team victory in the crit
Canyon Eisberg moved into the lead of the OVO Energy Tour Series for the first time in their history, picking up a maximum haul of points from Stevenage’s Bank Holiday double-header, winning the afternoon’s Team Time Trial before Harry Tanfield took the individual victory in the evening criterium to help them into the OVO Energy green jerseys.
As a result the team in blue become the first team other than JLT Condor or Madison Genesis to lead the Series since June 2015, when ONE Pro Cycling led the unique team-based Series heading to the final round.
While the battle for the title in the men’s Series draws closer, in the women’s OVO Energy Tour Series Team Breeze are slowly edging away from the opposition, now holding a seven point lead over NJC-Biemme-Echelon, with Storey Racing a further two points in arrears.
Anna Henderson, just 19 years old, sprints to victory after a long solo win two days before in Abersytwyth
The individual victories in Stevenage were a repeat of those two days before in Wales, as Anna Henderson (Team OnForm) and Tanfield took the wins. The former this time won from a bunch sprint while the latter once again took an impressive solo win by 26 seconds from Robert Scott (WIGGINS) and George Wood, putting in a strong performance from the Richardsons-Trek guest team.
Tanfield was part of a six-rider group that contested the finish having lapped the field, with the North Yorkshireman jumping away from his companions at the crucial moment.
He said: “Word has been spoken about lapped riders interfering with the race and it’s a lot easier circuit to pass on than in Aberystwyth cause it’s longer straights. Everyone got out of the way, and let us race it out and then as soon as we got past the peloton down the back straight I just whacked it down there and got a bit of a gap and then just kept riding.”
Tanfield will sit out Tuesday’s night’s London round at Wembley Park before returning to the line-up for the final round in Salisbury on Thursday, when he hopes to seal a first Tour Series title for Canyon Eisberg.
“I just hope they don’t muck it up tomorrow night,” he joked. “Old [Alex] Paton’s flying as he’s had a bit of time off after crashing and stuff but I’m gonna rest out tomorrow night. I’m sure the lads will do fine so hopefully they’ll have a good night and we can pick it up in Salisbury and give it the beans. It will be nice to do a new circuit actually but looking forward to Salisbury, our sponsors are all gonna be there so we will have to put on a good show.”
Further success for both the Series’ leading squads came with wins in the Brother Fastest Lap competitions. First Scot Rhona Callander took her first her fastest lap prize during the women’s race for Team Breeze, while youngster Charles Page took his first Brother-sponsored trophy in the men’s event.
In the Eisberg Points competitions, Nikki Juniper and Matt Gibson retain their leads and hold on the red jersey for the best individual rider. Juniper sits 21 points clear of Henderson, with Megan Barker in third place. All six individual race wins to date have been divided evenly among the trio.
Gibson keeps the jersey despite crashing out of the men’s race, maintaining a 11-point lead over Scott of WIGGINS.
In the men’s Team Time Trial event, held mid-afternoon in warm and sticky conditions, Canyon Eisberg took the win by just under one second from JLT Condor, with Madison Genesis less than 0.5 seconds further behind.
The key sprint for the team award – the peloton – is won by Ed Clancy but for the first time in a long while, there’s another team with guys who can sprint with Ed’s team and so it was as Canyon Eisberg took the team award
