BikeP0RN – A Very Special Race Bike

On Thursday, I attended a media day for the Holdsworth Pro Racing team at Rotherham and there, the first thing I saw was a very special race bike – a one off – for Russell Downing who helped put the team together.

Hand painted by an artist Jorge Jovino who has also done work for the lesser known (LoL) ‘Messi’ ;-) (footerballer) , the bike has references to Russell and his life like the image of the Fonz (from Happy Days) due to his nickname, ‘Fonzy’. His dog Enzo is on the bike, and some rainbow stripes due to a nickname given to him by Chris Walker of ‘Mondo’. The bike is a like a painting, it keeps giving the more you look at it with so much on there than pictured here.

Weighing just under 7kg with race wheels, the bike mimics in some ways the original Holdsworth bike that Keith Lambert (interview here) won the 1974 Pro Road Championship on.

Whilst the paint on this bike is different, the rest of the bikes have the same type of colour scheme on the carbon chassis adorned with Campagnolo Super Record EPS (electonic). The old bike of Keith Lambert had Campagnolo Super Record (but not electronic LoL) and whilst not as bling as the Campy on Fonzy’s bike, for us old skool former racers, it was great to see it again.

Lightweight – at just under 7kg, the bike was blowing in the wind even with the bidon in the cage

Campagnolo EPS Super Record – nothing but the best for the Fonz and the team. And Speedplay pedals he has used for at 15 years.

The symbol from Ireland to compliment the the fact the team is registered in Ireland and has a strong Irish line up headed by Damien Shaw, former Irish road race champion.

Fonzy gives the bike with its Campganolo Bora wheels with Panaracer rubber a few efforts before the ride in the Peaks
