Sunday saw the dress rehearsal for this coming weekends National Junior Womens Road Race hosted by Bourne Wheelers over an undulating 52 mile course.
Despite clashing with a late arranged BC training camp, and a four day stage race in the Czech Republic, 50 of the country’s best juniors took to the start line, under clear skies and rolled out with two neutral service cars and a broomwagon in tow.
Team 22 and Edco Continental had the numerical advantage and eventually both teams took the days spoils with April Tacey winning the race and Anna Kay, taking the Queen of the Mountain competition. But there was much more to the race than this.
After a tentative first few miles after the bunch rolled out from the magnificent Witham Hall Prep School which the Bourne Wheelers were using for the first time as an HQ for their events, it was Rosie Wallace (Edco Continental) who put the first significant attack in, gaining 20secs as she passed the finish line with four laps to go. But the vigilant bunch wernt going to let someone go this early and soon Wallace was back in the fold.
With 3 laps to go it was Kay who took the Queen of the Mountain points, just ahead of her teammate Alana Prior (Edco Continental). Then a crash took out Kim Baptista (NCC Group/Kuota/Torelli) and caused Prior to stop and chase. Prior wasnt to get to the front again, meaning two potential winners were out. Rachel Jary (VCLondres) flexed her muscles shortly afterwards and built up a 30 second lead, but all to no avail as she was reeled in.
At two laps to go , Kay once again took maximum QOM points. The north east rider, clearly demonstrating that her fantastic performance the previous weekend at the Tour of the Reservoir was no flash in the pan. With this she sewed up the competition and £100 prize.
Rosie Wallace having a dig off the front
With one and a half laps to go Lauren Murphy ( Liv Epic Coaching), Ellie Russell (Team Backstedt) and Jess Woodworth (Cycle Team on Form) prized themselves off the front. The most dangerous move of the race so far, but almost immediately they were shut down. Despite the grippy nature of the course it looked like a sprint finish at the top of Barbers Hill was going to decide the race, but then Tacey took the initiative, with a do or die effort with 3 miles to go. With her teammates, so well marshalled by team manager Colin Batchelor bossing the front of the bunch, her lead grew quickly to 18 seconds.
With 400 metres to go she still had 15 seconds, but as the gradient bit her lead tumbled. Would she hang on?? Yes was the answer, by 10 metres as the flying Felicity Gledhill (Sunsport Velo) and Emily Ashwood (Team on Form) just ran out of road. Tacey, thanks to her courageous gamble deserved the £200 first prize and will go into next weekends championship full of confidence.
