As Demare wins stage 4 of the 2017 Tour de France, Thomas survives another tumble whilst Cavendish crashes at high speed and Peter Sagan is thrown off the race
Tour de France: Stage 4
France’s Arnaud Démare stormed to victory on stage 4 of the 104th Tour de France as he fended off Peter Sagan and Alexander Kristoff in a bunch gallop in Vittel. Two crashes in the last kilometer prevented some sprinters from contesting the victory such Kittel (crash 1)and Cavendish/Swift/Degenkolb etc (crash 2).
Geraint Thomas retained the yellow jersey for the fourth consecutive day despite falling in the first crash and faces his first big test today with the first summit finish at La Planche des belles filles.
Lonesome Van Keirsbulck…
One hundred and ninety five riders took to the start of stage 4 in Mondorf-les-Bains, Luxemburg. Guillaume Van Keirsbulck (Wanty-Groupe Gobert) attacked from the gun and there was no reaction from the peloton or other riders wanting to go up the road with little in the way of pickings (KoM points etc) along the way. Van Keirsbulck got a 13.15 advantage at km 59 before Thomas De Gendt (Lotto-Soudal) and Julien Vermote (Quick-Step Floors) started setting the pace of the peloton after leaving the Team Sky of race leader Geraint Thomas regulating a slow tempo for the first hour of racing.
French teams FDJ with Arthur Vichot and Cofidis with Nicolas Edet, racing for their respective sprinter Arnaud Démare and Nacer Bouhanni, helped the two Belgian squads from half way into the stage. The gap was down to six minutes with 90km to go.
At the intermediate sprint of Goviller with 50km to go, the deficit of the peloton was 2.40 and the fastest man was Démare who outsprinted Peter Sagan, André Greipel and Marcel Kittel who was hanging back and not going full gas. Van Keirsbulck’s advantage was down to two minutes when he scored the only King of the Mountains points up for grabs at the col des Trois-Fontaines 37km away from the finish in Vittel.
Nathan Brown (Cannondale-Drapac) remained in the polka dot jersey, becoming the first American to do so since Greg LeMond (in 1986), Tejay van Garderen (in 2011) and Taylor Phinney (yesterday) lost it after one day.
Van Keirsbulck was reined with 16.5km to go after 191 kilometers of a solo breakaway. He received the prize of the most aggressive rider of the day. A crash with one kilometer to go stopped Marcel Kittel as well as the yellow jersey Thomas and the GC contenders all proceeded to roll in together. Up front however, the race exploded into controversay as the riders used all the road and then some playing follow the leader and as Sagan went for Démare’s wheel, he clashed with Cavendish who was hanging off the wheel after a brilliant peice of tactical work leading up to the sprint.
The Brit went down heavily and stayed down for a long time after one of the highest speed crashes you’re likley to see in a sprint finish. Whilst ahead of him, Démare became the first Frenchman to win a bunch sprint of the Tour de France since Jimmy Casper in Strasbourg in 2006.
The last French stage winner wearing the blue-white-red jersey of French champion was Thomas Voeckler in Bagnères-de-Luchon in 2010 Luchon. Démare also took the green jersey, which no Frenchman has done since Sylvain Chavanel, also in 2010. Geraint Thomas came home safely to retain the yellow jersey but the fingers being pointed at Sagan were everywhere and at first the jury relegated the world champion to last in the sprint and docked him points for the green jersey.
But then the race was abuzz later as the jury had changed their punishment and came out to explain they had DQ’d Sagan from the stage and the race.
The jury said “We decided to disqualify Peter Sagan from the 2017 Tour de France because he endangered seriously several other riders including Mark.” The next morning, Sagan’s team Bora Hansgrohe said ” The team disagrees with the decision and has protested it officially”.
Peter Sagan rejected he had caused, or in any way intended to cause the crash of Mark Cavendish on the final 200m of the stage with the team saying Peter stayed on his line in the sprint and could not see Cavendish on the right side. “In the sprint I didn’t know that Mark Cavendish was behind me. He was coming from the right side, and I was trying to go on Kristoff’s wheel. Mark was coming really fast from the back and I just didn’t have time to react and to go left. He came into me and he went into the fence. When I was told after the finish that Mark had crashed, I went straight away to find out how he was doing. We are friends and colleagues in the peloton and crashes like that are never nice. I hope Mark recovers soon.”
Sagan isn’t the only rider leaving the race as Mark Cavendish after a night of xrays and tests was considered too damaged to continued. Cavendish added:”I’m obviously massively disappointed to get this news about the fracture,” Cavendish said. “The team was incredible. They executed to perfection what we wanted to do this morning. I feel I was in a good position to win and to lose that and even having to leave the Tour, a race I have built my whole career around, is really sad.””
He dislocated the same shoulder when he crashed out of the Tour on the opening stage in 2014 in Harrogate. Team doctor Adrian Rotunno said Cavendish suffered a fracture to his scapula but there was no nerve damage and he would not require surgery.Speaking about the incident, Cavendish says “I was just following Demare and Sagan came over,” Cavendish said immediately after the stage. “I get on with Peter well, but I don’t get the elbow – I’m not a fan of him putting his elbow in me like that.”
Arnaud Demare: The stage winner however was delighted with the victory. “I have a great team,” said the new French champion. It was 100% devoted to me. We quickly realized that it would be a sprint but we had two cards in the final in case there was a breakaway. I am lucky to have a solid team, each rider giving a their all when it was needed. It’s awesome!”
Geraint Thomas (SKY): “Luckily I’m okay. I managed to scrub off a lot of speed but there was nowhere to go really. That’s the way it goes. I’m used to crashing so it’s fine! I’m all okay”. “Froomey is fine and he managed to miss it all. It was a good day in the saddle for him.” Thomas also had a word for his old friend and team-mate Mark Cavendish, who eventually got back up after his rough crash. He added: “It wasn’t nice to ride past Cav though still on the floor. These sprints are just always hectic.”
Ben Swift: “You’re sprinting and following the wheel and then all of a sudden I went flying. We were sprinting in a line and then all of a sudden there was a body on the floor and we tried to turn but it was not possible. We had to come back after the earlier crash so we were already on the limit. I don’t think I have ever crashed like I did today”
“I got a quick check over and was relived to have come away relatively unhurt – my skin suit did a great job of soaking most of the damage up. I am a little stiff and banged up but this evening I will spend a lot of time with our masseurs and try to get s good night’s sleep hopefully I won’t be to sore tomorrow.”
Guillaume Van Keirsbulck of Wanty Gobert (the lone leader for most of the stage): “I said this morning that I wanted to be part of the breakaway, and that was the case. Hilaire told me to continue my efforts, and that others would join me in the lead. But I have not seen anyone all day, that was not ideal!”
“The wind was not ideal. I was waiting for the last climb to give full gas and then I did not have much energy anymore. I would rather have had some company, but it is the 1st Tour for Wanty Groupe Gobert so that’s great. I’m going to sleep well this night! I want to try again later, but now I’ll do some slightly less intensive stages.”
Marcel Kittel (Quickstep): “Today we were well-placed and ready to do our sprint, but then that crash happened and I had to brake. There was no way I was coming back after such an incident on that slight uphill. The result we wanted to get today wasn’t there at the end of the stage, but I’m sure there will be other opportunities and we are confident”, said Marcel Kittel, who shrugged off the disappointment of conceding the green jersey and missing out on the chance to fight for another win at the Tour de France.
André Greipel (Lotto Soudal): “Before the stage, it was our goal to be at the front of the peloton on the uphill slope between kilometres four and three from the finish line. We succeeded and at two and half kilometres from the end, we were still with four riders behind the sprint train of Dimension Data. It was another strong performance by Tiesj Benoot and Marcel Sieberg also bridged a small gap. Jürgen Roelandts did the perfect lead-out in the final kilometre, but I hesitated a second too long to start my sprint. I might have lost the stage victory at that moment, but Démare was also very strong today. I am happy with the solid performance of the team in the finale and this gives enough confidence for the next sprint stages.”
“Immediately after the finish, I was very angry about the crash of Cavendish, after the manoeuvre by Sagan. I think that sprinters should have respect for each other, which does not mean that I think Sagan meant to cause a crash today. However, the manoeuvres that you make in a sprint should remain accountable. According to me, this was not the case today, nor during yesterday’s intermediate sprint, the jury should act against such behaviour.” Later however, he took to twitter to say “Sometimes I should watch images before I say something. Apologies to @petosagan as I think that decision of the judge is too hard”.
In poll on VeloUK, 60% of readers said it was wrong for Sagan to have been disqualified. Others closer to the race were not so sure: Roger Hammond, a former sprinter and DS for Cavendish, was cautious at first in media interviews but later said on twitter, “Causes a big crash at 1.5 to go, elbows fellow competitor in the head 300 meters… can only result in one decision. #Goodbye” and Rolf Aldag said “Time to step up #UCI. This was not a race accident. Violence. Hard to DQ a world champion from #letour, but needs to be done and then added “Sorry, badly explained. Crash isn’t the problem. Elbow into face=violence= out=correct. Renshaw headbutting 2010= violence= out= correct”
Alexander Kristoff (2nd, Katusha). “There were many teams there and I said to the guys it would be better to take control at the end so we could have some help before the end when it would be man-against-man. I think our team did a good job, especially Marco Haller at the end – he was fantastic for me. I missed Rick at the end, maybe with him in front I could have come a little bit closer but I think Démare would have beat me anyway. I’m happy with today. This sprint was way better than my last one and shows improvement. I hope to get better in the next days. For sure this course was a challenge and very technical. I heard the crash behind me. I hope everyone is OK. Everyone is always fighting for position in a sprint like this and it’s always dangerous for crashes,” said Alexander Kristoff.

Michael Matthews (Sunweb) “It was an extremely chaotic final today. In the end I was happy to stay upright and look forward to the chances to come.”
Nacer Bouhanni “It was nervous. I was in the ideal position in the last few kilometers. I knew this final off by heart. But 150 meters from the line, while I’m in the wheel of Alexander Kristoff, Arnaud Demare cut me up across the road and I touch his rear wheel. From then on, it was over. If I do not brake, I fall. I had the heart to shine at home, we must now erase this disappointment, there are still many sprints.” Bouhanni’s statement raises the argument as to why the jury did not punish Demare for his devating from the racing line several times.
Richie Porte: “It wasn’t so hard but it was pretty stressful there in the final. There were a couple of big crashes. Thank god for the three kilometer rule. I’m super motivated for tomorrow. All of the guys in the team are motivated for tomorrow as well. I think we just have to see how the race goes but I expect it to be absolutely full gas. It’s the first big test of the Tour de France in 2017.”
John Degenkolb: “Before the big crash from Cavendish, there was one crash before and that’s why I was a little in the back,” explained Degenkolb. “I was just coming back to the front of the lead group for the sprint, and Cav was in front of me, and I couldn’t avoid him by jumping over him. I went fully over the handlebars, and I had a pretty bad crash. In the end, luckily, there is nothing broken, no fractures. But still I have a very painful right shoulder, and we will see how it goes tomorrow if I can be on the bike. I will give everything and hope to continue, of course.”
