Q & A: Joe Laverick (Catford CC/Banks)

1. What was the highlight of 2016 for you and why?
Joe: Winning the GHS National Championships because it was my first ever nationals and by winning it I’m following in the footsteps of riders like Alex Dowsett.

2 . What was your favourite/most fun race of 2016
Joe: Most enjoyable was the York evening series, good banter and good racing. However my favourite was the Pedalsport Day at the Races; I managed to win from a solo breakaway.

3. What was the toughest race of 2016 for you and why?
Joe: Scarborough National Series. I was in the front group until I was crashed into up the climb. I was never getting back to the front group but rode in anger and killed myself.

4. If there was one thing you learned most in 2016 to help you go faster/better, what was that?
Joe: Spend less time talking to opponents and more time observing the race, this leads to saving more energy and spending less time in the wind etc.

5. What is the best piece of equipment (clothing/bike/gadget) to do with racing you are proud of most?
Joe: My Stages Power meter, nothing better to help me with my winter training. I also cannot wait to get my hands on the team kit which we’re getting at the launch next weekend.

6. What is your warm up routine for races – rollers or turbo? Music or no music?
Joe: No music, just warm up, chatting to take my mind off the race.

7. What are the goals for 2017?
Joe: Retain my national championships, and get my 2nd cat license ASAP. Furthermore, I want to be competitive in the National Series and try to help the team where possible. I also want to do a sub-20min 10.

8. What sort of training have you been doing over the winter – long miles/ intervals
Joe: Bit of everything, long miles with intervals at the weekends and then pure intervals on the turbo during in the week after school.

9. When will your first race be?
Joe: My first race is the 4th of March, just a little crit. My first proper race is March 11th, Birmingham University one day stage race, it’s the first race I’m doing with the team so I’m looking forward to it.

10. Finally – what is your favourite type of cycle racing – TT, road race, crits or other …
Joe: I’ve got to say TT’s being the national champion! However I am fond of road-racing, nothing beats winning from a long breakaway.
