Busy year for the South East Road Race League and Cyclopark in 2017
News: South East Road Race League
After many years organising the South East Road Race League to amazingly high standards, Kim Anderson and Adrian Kingwell decided it was time to step down and pass the league onto someone else.
Cyclopark, the charitable trust who run the country’s top cycle park in Gravesend, decided to take on the running to help ensure that top level racing for South East riders continues.
A proposal was put forward at an EGM and then voted on at the leagues AGM. Voted in at the AGM were Crinnan Gould (Project 51) as Secretary, Adam Cotterell (GS Greenwich) as Chaiperson and Alan Denman (Cyclopark & Project 51) as Race Administrator. The membership also voted in the proposal from Cyclopark for how the league would run in 2017 and how it would go forward.
The main changes for 2017 are the leagues affiliation criteria. Club affiliation will only be open to clubs that are registered in the British Cycling South East region and individual affiliation will only be for members of those affiliated clubs. To enter any of the leagues races in advance you must be affiliated.
The reason for the change is to ensure that the affiliated clubs, who all must help organise one of the races, feel that it’s more fair all round. It was felt previously that some clubs and riders were affiliating and mucking in with their organising responsibilities while lots of other clubs were allowed to get the benefits of a full racing calendar without putting anything back into the league.
The new committee feel it is crucial to the sustainability and growth of the league and the racing calendar in general in the south east if all clubs take more responsibility for the organising of races as well as the riding of them. Non-affiliated riders will be allowed to enter on the day of the race if space permits.

The other main change for 2017, is the introduction of split category racing for both Women and men. There will be 4th & 3rd cat racing with 75% priority given to 4th cats to help them make the transition from closed circuit racing to racing on the open road.
There will also be a calendar for 3rd/4th cat and 2nd/3rd cat Women’s races to help introduce the lower categories to open road races without having to be mixed in with elite and 1st cats. For 2017 female riders do not have to affiliate to the league. This is to encourage riders from other regions to enter and increase the field sizes and quality of the racing.
SERRL have spent a long time looking at the license breakdown of south east riders to decide on how to distribute their calendar across the categories. They have cut out for 2017 the elite and 1st cat races in order to attempt to improve the level of the 2nd, 3rd & 4th category riders. They then plan to re-introduce races for 1st cats once the numbers of riders in the south east with 1st cat licenses warrant it.
SERRL would like to encourage as many south east clubs as possible to affiliate to the league. The more clubs affiliated, the lighter the organisational role will be for each club on race day and the more the league can expand in future years.
Also for 2017, Cyclopark will be running their Thursday evening circuit races with every other week being development races for 4th cats and standalone races for junior men and women. These races are run independently from SERRL and are open to all riders.
