Q & A with silver medallist in the 2015 Â Under 23 British RR Championship, Sam Lowe who has moved across from Team Wiggins to Bike Channel Canyon for 2017
Q & A: Sam Lowe (Bike Channel Canyon)
In the continuing series of question and answer features on VeloUK, we chat with silver medallist in the 2015 British RR Championship (Under 23) Sam Lowe who has moved across from Team Wiggins to Bike Channel Canyon for 2017
Sam’s reaction to signing for the country’s newest team is “I’m obviously really pleased to be joining the team for the 2017 season. With the sponsors, staff and riders that are onboard, it promises to offer plenty of opportunities going forward, which is something I’m certainly looking forward to”.
“It’s not an easy time at the moment in terms of getting into a team, so I’m grateful to Tim (Elverson) for giving me the opportunity to be part of the new project.
1.What was the highlight of 2016 for you and why?
Sam: I wouldn’t say I had one in particular, but I’d have to say having such a good race programme all year round, meant I got plenty of opportunities to ride in some big races, and learn a lot from doing them.
2.What was your favourite/most fun race of 2016
Sam: My favourite races of the year would be Ronde L’Isard and Piccolo Giro di Lombardia, just because us as a team, we had a good crack at them, and they were both typical under 23 races where everyone’s just trying to kick each other’s heads in from start to finish.
3.What was the toughest race of 2016 for you and why?
Sam: My toughest race this year would have to be the Tour of Croatia, as it was one of the biggest races I’ve ever done, and the length of the stages as well as the quality of field, was certainly a big step up compared to what I’d done before.
Back in 2015, Sam was second in the Under 23 British RR Championships on the Lincoln GP circuit
4.What is the best piece of equipment (clothing/bike/gadget) to do with racing you are proud of most?
Sam: I don’t think I could really pick one thing, but all of the kit and equipment I’ve been using this year with Team Wiggins has all been quality.
5.What is your warm up routine for races – rollers or turbo? Music or no music?
Sam: It depends on the race and what mood I’m in really. I wouldn’t say I have anything that I religiously stick to, but a bit of music doesn’t go a miss just to get me up for things.
6.What’s your favourite discipline on the road; road racing and/or crits (and why?)
Sam: My favourite discipline on the road would definitely have to be just a standard road race, just because I think I’m more suited to that style of racing, and with a road race it’s a bit more open and there is more to it, rather than short crit where it is over after an hour.

7.Will you stay in the UK to prepare for next season during the winter or get in a training camp or two abroad to get in some serious miles?
Sam: I’ll be staying in the UK up until Christmas, but once we get into the new year, I would have thought I’ll try to get away a couple of times, just to mix things up a little and hopefully avoid any bad weather for a short while at least.
8.When will you start training for 2017 and what comes first – long steady miles or a mix of miles and efforts?
Sam: I’ve already started with my training for 2017 following a few weeks of easing myself back into things, after my end of season break, and at the moment I’m just combining a mix of miles, efforts and gym work to get me in good shape by the time the season comes around again.
9. What are the goals for 2017?
Sam: My goals for 2017 will be to get some results under my belt, as although this year has been a good experience and a learning curve, I haven’t had any stand out results as such, so hopefully that’s something I can improve on next season in the big road races we do.
10. And finally, how tough is it being a pro bike in the UK – what are the biggest challenges?
Sam: I think it’s get tougher and tougher each year in the UK, just because each of the teams are getting stronger, and the quality of riders on the British scene is constantly improving, so that just means you’ve got to stay committed, and you can’t afford to take your foot off the gas.
