In a special edition of the Q & A, we quiz Tom Pidcock on his awesome third place in the Junior Men’s World Cup at Zeven (Germany)
Q & A: Tom Pidcock – third in World Cup
Britain’s European Junior men’s cyclo-cross champion Tom Pidcock came back from a crash to finish third in the Junior Men’s World Cup at Zeven (Germany) a mere four seconds behind the winner.
As well as Tom’s third, Ben Turner was a brilliant 7th, Dan Tulett 13th and Thomas Mein 28th showing just what great talent there is in cyclo-cross right now. Evie Richards (U23 World Champion) was 14th in the Women’s race.
Pidcock’s third place came after he recovered from an early crash, closing a gap on the leading Belgian duo of Jelle Camps and Toon Vandebosch that was as big as 45 seconds at one stage of the race.
Pidcock’s late recovery put him in the mix for the overall victory, but Camps held firm to secure the win, with Vandebosch pipping the young British rider to third in a sprint finish.
VeloUK quizzed Tom on the podium place with him saying “I am pleased with my performance however my process and stupidity made me disappointed”.
Asked about the crash, Tom explained “at the end of the second lap, I was leading with one rider following and on the final corner, my wheel slipped under the netting then hit a post, flipped me over and my chain came off. Then it took me ages to get it back on because of my big gloves. Then I was 45 plus secs down.”
The crash came after a good start for Tom and he hasn’t had the handicap he had last year of being gridded at the back, saying that the combination of his results means he’s now ranked number 1 in the world and so is gridded 1st.
Tom was on a special bike presented to him by his team in colours to match his European jersey. “It’s a Ridley bike” says Tom, “but customised with Euro colours and branded Milnes. It’s a carbon frame with single chain ring and Shimano Dura Ace mechanical groupset.
Behind every champion, are some special people and for Tom, he has Seth Smith, his Team boss/manager/pit man looking over him at every race he goes to. Next race, the Namur World Cup and the ride at Zeven gives the youngster the confidence to know he can win given that bit of luck that every one needs in a race.
Good luck to Tom and thank you for the interview
