Superfast course sees Hannah Payton and Yorben Van Tichelt getting their hands in the air at Trinity Park (Ipswich) for round 4 of the National CX Trophy

Feature Report: Ipswich National Trophy

RST Cycle Clothing & Trigon Bikes

Whilst many expect a muddy slog typical of a winter cyclo-cross race at this time of the year, despite a lot of rain around the country recently, the one at Trinity Park Ipswich was superfast. But you can’t escape that on probably one of the fastest courses ever, much the same riders dominated the races in the National Trophy.

Just like in any cycling discipline, variety is indeed the spice of life and the three plus kilometre course on firm ground and with more tarmac than normal was certainly to the liking of some and that showed in the races where riders like Joshua Giddings, Roy Chamberlain and Dougal Toms won their respective events.

_ipswichtrophy_barn

The course was different to last years at the same venue with the race going into and out of the barn where there was a bar and a TV showing the top end of the course action. All that was missing was a barn full of cheering spectators which was a shame but along with the hurdles, steps, sand and more, it was a course that Steve Grimwood in his 25th year of organising cross races had certainly tried hard to make different and special to any other.

It certainly resulted in some close and exciting racing! The day started with the veterans men’s races as normal and the weather too was kind to us all. Not as sunny as the day before, a few spots of rain but still dry and not as freezing as it could be at this time of year.

In the Vets 40-49, Dave Collins, enjoying the course, led through the barn at the start as the race packed with local riders got underway. Dan Guest however soon led alone whilst the yellow jerseyed Nick Craig was back in the chasers.

The rider who has ridden the Olympic Road Race as well as countless mountain bike and cyclo-cross races, soon showed his class however, and bunny hopping the planks which wasn’t something he enjoyed as much as his son Charlie, Nick Craig soon bridged to Guest.

The two of them then led for the rest of the race before Craig slipped away and won the race to increase his lead in the series. Dave Collins was third.

In the 50 plus, a rider more used to winning in the regional leagues and a handy rider on the road for sure, Roy Chamberlain, found the course to his liking as he broke away and held off the usual leaders of this category such as Steven Davies (Hargroves Cycles Ridley) and series leader Pete Middleton. Chamberlain went onto win by almost a minute for his first Trophy win whilst Davies won the gallop for second with local Jimmy Piper in third.

Whilst the vets podiums were finished, the Girls race started with the Under 16’s followed by the Under 14’s. Both were won by their series leaders but in different ways. In the Under 16’s, Harriet Harnden still hasn’t found a rival to challenge her and she won alone from the sprint finish for second between Ava Oxley-Szilagyi and Eluned King.

In the Under 14s though, no one rider dominated and the win was decided in the dash to the line by a small group with Millie Cousins having no time for celebration as she sprinted all the way to win from Anna Wadsworth and Charlotte McGreevy.

In the next two races, Boys Under 16 and Under 14, both events were won with solo efforts from riders who revelled on the fast course. In the Under 16 Boys, Lewis Askey (RST/Cycle Division) led his race alone whilst behind a duo formed with Charlie Craig and Oliver Draffan. Despite their best efforts, Askey stayed away (12 seconds) much to the delight of his supporters. Charlie Craig nipped away at the end to take second from Draffan.

Lewis Askey (RST/Cycle Divison) always knows how to celebrate a victory!

In the Under 14s, there was a delighted winner in Joshua Giddings of MI Racing (pictured below) who solo’d to his first win in a Trophy in a race his dad, champion racer, Geoff Giddings, explained they had targeted. Bunny hopping the planks, Joshua was riding like a pro, no doubt helped by the coaching he gets from his dad at the Mi Racing Academy, and then celebrated well to take the win from Max Poole and series leader Finley Pickering.

A short break then followed before the Junior and Women’s event. This event had three races and one by one, the Juniors then Women and finally Vet Women took to the start took with a sprint up the 500 metres of tarmac to the grass ahead of them.

In the Juniors, with many of the country’s leading riders away in Belgium, it was a very open race that came down to a sprint where Dougal Toms won in a photo finish from Matt Ellis with Toby Barnes happy in third and on the podium.

In the Women’s, series leader Hannah Payton was part of a selection that formed at the front of the race before she managed to open a gap and the race split. Payton led Annie Simpson, who the day before had been to the wedding of Sarah Reynolds and Dan Fleeman whilst Ffion James was also solo in third.

Behind them came the battle for the junior podium spot between Sophie Thackray, Eslpeth Grace, Maddie Gammons, Emily Wadsworth and Megan James with Thackray getting the verdict to deny the Welwyn rider Grace.

_ipswichtrophy_payton

“I wasn’t anticipating the race to go that way at all ” said Hannah Payton (above) to Andy Whitehouse. “I sat in for the first lap, and there was a group of six or seven of us. I wanted it to be a much smaller group and for me to be able to sit on a wheel. The first time up the finish straight I took my opportunity to attack and nobody responded so I opened up a lead that went up to 12 seconds within a lap and I kept it going.”

The Vet Women’s race saw a handful of riders form at the front including women’s legend Isla Rowntree on her single gear. On such a fast course, Isla was certainly at a disadvantage and one can only image how fast she had to spin the tiny gear up the finish straight into the headwind to win the race after slipping away on the technical 4×4 section.

Second was Alison Kinloch from Maddi Smith with Tracey Fletcher doing a ride to finish fourth whilst Helen Pattison, who was with the leaders for much of the race, finished just off the back in 5th.

Interview with the delightful Isla Rowntree

Elite Men’s
This race had a big entry which was great to see with the total entry for the day not that far short of Derby according to the organiser Steve Grimwood. It was a course, according to a seasoned team owner, that would suit the Belgians and so it proved.

_ipswichtrophy_start_web

It was Dutchman Roel Van der Stegen and Dan Booth who led the race away on the opening lap with the under-23 rider van der Stegan setting a blistering pace. But, as in so many of the Trophy races this season, a selection of three formed at the front, Yorben Van Tichelt (Belgium), Ian Field (Hargroves Cycles Ridley) and Billy Harding.

Behind them, a chase group formed with Van Der Stegen with David Fletcher, Jack Clarkson, Paul Oldham, and Michael Butler (Hargroves Cycles-Ridley). By the mid-way point of the race, the three riders out front had a solid lead and soon started to up the tempo which split them as Van Tichelt opened up a gap at the front chased by Field.

As Harding slipped back into the clutches of the chase group, Van Tichelt bunny hopped his way to the victory with Field second making it two victories each for them in the series so far. Third went to the Dutchman Roel Van der Stegen from Fletcher.

_ipswichtrophy_yorben

“Ian is a really strong rider, we saw that in the last two rounds,” said winner Yorben Van Tichelt to Andy Whitehouse. “It was a fast track today, and I needed to take advantage of that as Ian couldn’t use his power on the uphill sections like he did in the other races. I tried my best and it was good enough so I am happy”.

The Belgian however will not be at the final round in Shrewsbury as he is contracted to another race in Switzerland which leaves the win of the series for the taking by co leader Ian Field. See the list of former winners of the National Trophy Series here
