Euro Track Champs: Day 3 in Paris

Scottish Gold
Katie Archibald won her Gold in the Individual Pursuit at the 2016 UEC European Track Championships, adding to the Gold she won in the Team Pursuit at the Rio Olympics.
The Scottish rider, who’s winning margin was four seconds over her Polish opponent Justyna Kaczkowska, had set the fastest time and a personal best in qualifying earlier in the day. A well known name, and comp record holder for a short time in the Women’s 10, Anna Turvey, won the bronze medal for Ireland.
For Archibald, it was her third consecutive Individual Pursuit victory at these championships. “I thought I was destined for failure because I’d been working at a lot slower pace in training,” said Archibald.
“I guess I must still be benefitting from my Olympic form but I’m also pretty well rested! It guarantees me a place at the World Track Championships as continental champion so that’s my ticket booked – I’m really happy!” Teammate Manon Lloyd was 16th.
Gold for Albert Torres
Spanish rider Albert Torres, who came to the UK to race in 2016 for Raleigh GAC and left with several wins to his name, won the new Olympic format Omnium in Paris.
In the first of the events, the Scratch race, it was a slow start for Torres who finished in 11th place whilst GB’s Mark Stewart was 8th, and Felix English (Madison Genesis, Ireland) was 16th.
In the Tempo race, a mix between a Points and Elimination event, where there is a sprint on every lap after the first five laps, with the first rider across the line winning two points, and the second getting one point and lapped riders being eliminated, Torres came back with a bang, winning that with English in 4th and Stewart in 6th.
In round 3 of the Omnium, Torres was 4l, one place ahead of Felix English with Mark Stewart in 9th. That left the overall with one race to go, Torres sitting in 4th place but as ever, the Points race was the clincher as it has been in the Omnium in its old format.
Torres, as well as Swiss rider Suter, gained a lap and at the finish, the Raleigh GAC rider was on 126 points, three ahead of Suter (silver) with Ben Thomas of France in third. Mark Stewart was 6th and Felix English 7th.
Other events
In the Men’s sprint, GB’s Owens finished in seventh place and Truman in eighth. In the Women’s Keirin, Rachel James raced well in her first round heat for the women’s keirin but, after placing third, did not automatically progress to the semi-finals and went through in the reps.
After reaching the final, with a third place finish in her semi-final, James crashed after clipping wheels with another rider but was still upbeat on her performances. “There are a lot of positives and a lot of negatives,” said James. “I was really happy to get into the final but I’m hundred percent missing some race experience – I crashed twice today which was not ideal!
“I knew I didn’t have much in my legs in the final, so I tried to wait but the gap didn’t open up and I ended up touching a wheel and coming down.” Ellie Richardson also ended up in the repechages after finishing fifth in her opening heat but did not progress any further.
Elinor Barker competed in the Women’s Points race, and took points from several of the ten intermediate sprints but finished out of the medals in fifth with 11 points behind Wild, Belgiums Jolien D’Hoore and Pawlowska.
