Olympic champion Katie Archibald was second to silver medallist at the Road Worlds, Kirsten Wild in the European Elimination Championship
News: Archibald 2nd at Euros
Olympic champion Katie Archibald was second to silver medallist at the Road Worlds, Kirsten Wild in the European Elimination Championship.
The Scottish rider rode a canny race positioning herself well as each rider was eliminated until only the final sprint to the line won by one of the worlds fastest road sprinters, Wild of Holland. “My legs felt good. I’m saying I’m happy with silver…but people are really happy with gold!”
In other events, there was Team pursuit qualifying on the first day where Dannielle Khan, Emily Kay, Emily Nelson, Manon Lloyd put together a strong ride for the Great Britain women’s cycling team, ending the session in third place and setting up a semi-final with sixth placed Russia on Thursday.
The Great Britain men’s team, which included Rio gold medallist Steven Burke, didn’t are as well, setting the sixth fastest time which means they will have a semi-final ride off with Italy on Thursday to try and make the bronze medal final. … continued after advert
In the sprint events (500m time trial), returning to the track on a solo bike after several years as a tandem pilot, Rachel James rode first out of the field of 16 riders and set a time of 35.139 for the two-lap time trial. That was good enough for seventh, in a personal best time but found it tough going. “That was hard for me; I haven’t done a 500 in competition for about three years,†she said. “A lap into that I was really feeling it, but it was a perfect opener for the team sprint tomorrow – I wasn’t expecting to do much in the 500 but I set a PB so I’m happy with that!â€
Eleanor Richardson completed the two laps in a time of 36.060, was eleventh. “I got out of the gate well but then I struggled a little bit with my second and third revs – I think because all my practice has been going into man two for the Team Sprint so I’m not used to doing maximal starts,†she said. “I think I’ve got a better handle on the tightness of the track after doing a couple of laps out on my own so tomorrow should be a lot better!â€
In the men’s time trial over a kilometre (4 laps), Joe Truman finished the competition in fifth place and was happy with his first outing at elite level at the European Championships. “I was happy with that; I got a PB so I can’t complain,†he said. “Ryan did a fast first lap today and I got the PB so we’re feeling positive going into the team sprint tomorrow.â€
Ryan Owens set the fastest time for the opening lap, 17.9, and ended the four lap effort in 13th place. In the Men’s Scratch race, GB’s Ollie Wood tried to take a lap on the rest of the field several times but it wasn’t to be and he was 20th. Felix English, riding for Ireland but a Madison Genesis rider in British pro races, was 5th whilst Raleigh GAC rider Seb Mora, world champion in the event, found himself well marked and finished 16th. Another Raleigh GAC rider, Morgan Kniesky, was eighth.
