Talking to winner of the Lincoln GP and Velothon Wales as well as the GP of Wales, Tom Stewart of Madison Genesis
Tour of Britain Chat: Tom Stewart (Madison Genesis)
Winner of the Lincoln GP and Velothon Wales as well as the GP of Wales, Tom Stewart of Madison Genesis is having a stellar year and goes into the Tour of Britain with a chance to showcase how good the domestic based riders can be in this national tour.

Asked about his preparation for the race, he says “It’s all been since the nationals really. I had a little break after them, went away training for two weeks and then hit the ground running since then. We had RideLondon, a race in Belgium, then straight to a training camp before six days easy at home. We then went back to Belgium for five days of racing in Belgium and Holland and then four days at home before arriving here.â€
“It’s all gone quick in the last month but I think we’ve timed it really well hopefully.â€
Having had such success, I put it to Tom he must be confident of a good ride in the race. “I am going into the race with a lot of confidence. The team is in general. We achieved everything we set out to do this year apart from winning the Tour Series but we have performed well in every race we wanted to.â€
“I feel less pressure because of that. Don’t get me wrong, we’re absolutely here to do well but I don’t think we’re chasing a good year in this race. We’ve had a good year and we’re here to finish it off well in this race.â€
His aims and that of the team are to try and do a good GC ride. “One of the teams aims is for Erick and I to go for a good overall and that is a huge ask and will not be straight forward at all especially with the time trialâ€.
“The last few years, we’ve always got in the breaks and animated the race and we know we can do that. I know I can get in breaks and fight for jerseys but we want to do something differentâ€.
Talking about the reasons why it’s good to be in the race, Tom says “It’s a good race because it’s nice we have a bit more freedom. I enjoyed getting in the breakaways and things and the World Tour guys want that to happen where as in the British scene, as soon as a Madison Genesis guy goes up the road, everybody goes and I have to be much more careful with the breaks I get into nowadays.â€
“Here, personally and as a team, we have a lot more freedom to do that. I just enjoy racing at this level. TheWorldTour guys respect what we’re trying to do and receptive to us chatting to them and respect that we’re here to get involvedâ€.
It’s also the last race of the season for the team which as Tom says, means they can go out there and empty the tank before they can put their feet up!
Good luck to Tom and Madison Genesis at the Tour of Britain
