National Circuit Series Round 4 (West Midlands)

NATIONAL CIRCUIT SERIES MEN – ROUND 4
The Isle of Man’s Matt Bostock (Ribble Rebellion) disrupted the race at Dudley with yet another well timed sprint to take the victory from Rhys Britton and series leader Rob Scott.

The men’s race began with Tekkerz taking the lead (Joe Holt followed by Will Roberts of Saint Piran). It didn’t take long before the first attack saw a solo rider go clear, Harry Macfarlane, who had 12 seconds after a lap out front. Toby Barnes soon went clear of the peloton just ahead of Rob Scott and they chased the leader Macfarlane down to make three leaders after five laps but the gap was only four seconds. They were soon caught by a big leading group before Matt Bostock of Ribble Rebellion went on the attack, applying pressure that saw the group splitting.

Max Rushby of Ribble Rebellion then went clear chased by Tom Armstrong and they were joined by Tekkerz rider Rob Scott before all three were caught by the chasers which then saw Rusby go again, this time with Rhys Britton and they opened a big gap (15 seconds) quickly as they approached half an hour of racing. A lone chaser soon appeared, Will Truelove, who after a hard chase for a few laps, bridged the gap to make three leaders after 16 laps before they were caught a lap or two later.

Toby Barnes then applied the pressure and a selection formed at the front with Tom Couzens also spending time on the front with six laps to go. The front group was just 7 riders now as the laps raced past and Rob Scott was soon hammering away trying to get clear, opening a gap and joined by Ribble Rebellion rider Matt Bostock. The two of them soon opened the gap as Tom Armstrong lead the chase. Scott sat up and let the three chasers catch them with two laps to go and the pace seemed to drop in the front group as it got tactical.

Armstrong meanwhile went solo off the front and soon had the bell lap but was caught as they approached the finish and into the final bend, Matt Bostock made his move and won the sprint to the line!

NATIONAL CIRCUIT SERIES WOMEN – ROUND 4
Won by Guildford winner Eilidh Shaw after a race where a crash ruined the chances of many a favourite including last years winner Lucy Glover and a breakaway formed with Shaw having a teammate in Keira Bond to help her take the victory

A 50 minute race lead away by a team Jadan rider (Dannielle Watkinson) with last years winner Lucy Glover near the front as the riders were strung out. Otley winner Frankie Hall (DAS Hutchinson Brother UK) was soon spotted near the front too whilst Jennifer Powell lead the sizable peloton race for a long time early on. Also at the front was Guildford winner Eilidh Shaw leading Corrine Side, last years series winner along with the likes of Lucy Lee and other leading riders.

The race within the first 15 minutes had split with a small group off the back of the big leading group. As the race past the 20 minute mark, the pressure constantly applied in the lead group saw that group starting to split as it strung out in one long line. A crash near the front of the group then split the front group big time, and Jennifer Powell continued to apply the pressure at the front from Shaw, Bond and Thrackray.

The big loser in the crash was Lucy Glover, last years winner. The lead group of a half dozen riders was joined by Frankie Hall and others. Alba teammates Keira Bond and Eilidh Shaw soon opened up a gap on the rest of the lead group which was now well split with Frankie Hall and Jennifer Powell chasing them hard. They soon joined up to make four leaders with 15 seconds lead on the big chaser group who were closing the gap slightly as they got to five to go.

The final laps saw the break racing to the finish together and after Keira Bond lead the group round that final lap, it was Shaw who made her move into the final corner, chased by Frankie Hall all the way to the line.

FOOTNOTE: News filtering through that the series leader for the Women’s National Circuit Series, Isabel Darvill, suffered some horrible injuries in the race at Dudley. “Fought to the end and ended with needing 9 stitches in the knee and a 26th place 🥲 Day off the bike before getting ready for Sheffield on Wednesday … we’re not giving up yet!” says Isabel on her FB page…

Even worse injuries for second in series on the same points as Isabel, and last years series winner, Corrine Side, who says on Instagram “Managed to cross the finish line in 24th at Dudley GP, but sadly it was on foot with a broken collarbone 🥲 Luck wasn’t on my side with 2 crashes and lots of chasing back on🤕 time for lots of rest and recovery again. Gutted to go out joint leading the National Series,”
