Result: Mini Report: Nick Corkill RR

A strong field of 49 riders contested the Nick Corkill Memorial Handicap road race on Sunday in the Isle of Man, with former Tour de Yorkshire winner, Chris Lawless, taking the win from Callum Salisbury of Cycling Academy, with the evergreen ex-Motorpoint Pro and Ras Tailteann winner, Andrew Roche, rounding out the podium. The women’s trophy was won by Ruby Oakes of Shibden Apex RT.

To the delight of the locals, a surprise late addition to the field was Mark Cavendish, home on the island for a short visit and keen as ever to support the Manx club scene by drilling the junior group around the testing 9.5-mile Bride circuit. The race remembers Nick Corkill, a well-known figure in Isle of Man cycling, both as a competitor and official and a fun-loving character, who lived life to the full.

Nick competed regularly throughout the 1960s and 1970s, and continued with 10-mile time trials and regular social rides well into the late 1990s and the new Millenium. In 1966 he had the proud distinction of representing the Isle of Man at the highest level in the Commonwealth Games.
He rode alongside Nigel Dean in support of Peter Buckley the day that the latter man won the 120-mile road race in Jamaica, the first Commonwealth Games gold to be achieved by the Isle of Man.

Nick and Nigel later celebrated by climbing a flagpole to secure a Jamaican flag as a souvenir of the Games. They were apprehended by a local bobby and only managed to escape a night in the slammer by bribing the officer with the team’s small cap badges featuring tailless Manx cats! A race commissaire and official, Nick later attended further Commonwealth Games and numerous national races in the UK and Ireland as assistant manager, coach and team mechanic. In his latter years he was the sport’s newspaper columnist and chairman of Ellan Vannin Cycling Club.
