Startlist: Beaumont Trophy/Curlew Cup

Coming soon is the next round of the National Road Series with the running of the Women’s Curlew Cup and Men’s Beaumont Trophy in Northumberland (Stamfordham)

Startlist: Beaumont Trophy/Curlew Cup

CURLEW CUP

This year’s Curlew Cup women’s race will take place on the morning of Sunday 17th September, starting at 8.45am. The Curlew Cup was launched in 2012, the year after we hosted
the women’s national road championships, which was won by Lizzie Diegnan, who has since become one of the world’s leading riders. The race will start and finish adjacent to the village green in Stamfordham.  Riders will tackle three anti-clockwise laps of a 25-mile circuit. Total race distance is 76.1 miles. A Queen of the Mountains (QoM) competition will be the focus of riders on all three laps, with points awarded at the summit of the Ryal climb.

BEAUMONT TROPHY

This year’s Beaumont Trophy will take place on the afternoon of Sunday 17th September, starting at 1.15pm. The Beaumont Trophy is one of the longest running national road events on the calendar. It was first run in 1952, the year after the organising club, Gosforth Road Club, was formed. The trophy was presented by Rex Beaumont, a cycle and motorcycle wholesaler based in Newcastle. The first edition of the race was won by Stan Blair riding for Viking Cycles and started and finished in Gosforth Park, where the club had its headquarters.

The most prolific winner of the Trophy is Ray Wetherell who has won it 5 times. Sir Bradley Wiggins won it twice, including 2011 (pictured) when the event was the National Championships. Current INEOS pro Connor Swift won the race in 2018 when, again, it was the National Championships. Last year, winner Jack Rootkin-Gray and his Saint Piran team dominated the race.

The race will start and finish adjacent to the village green in Stamfordham. The race will use a combination of two circuits: riders tackling four anti-clockwise laps of a larger 25-mile circuit, marked in red on the map and then finishing with a single lap of a smaller 14-mile circuit, marked in blue. Total race distance is 114 miles. There will be a King of the Mountains competition based on points awarded at the summit of the Ryal climb (pictured) on each of the 4 ascents.
