Q&A with Paracycling GB Rider Millie Cass

Four weeks ago, C3 para-cyclist Millie Cass was planning to watch the World Track Championships on TV. But after getting a sudden call up to Team GB, she’s now lining up on the boards of the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome on a brand new Handsling TR3evo track bike.

She speaks about the breakthrough event of a lifetime.

Q: What’s your background in track cycling?
Millie: I got into track cycling after my dad saw an advert for a para-cycling Talent ID day with British Cycling. After riding the track a handful of times, I went straight into international competition at Newport. I’ve previously competed and medalled in both track and road world cups, as well as holding the current national time trial title.

Q: What led to your Team GB selection?
Millie: I received a call up for the World Championships four weeks ago. It was somewhat unexpected as I am not a full time squad member but I am absolutely delighted to be given the opportunity to race at this level, especially at a home world championships. This is a huge step forward in my career as it’s my first time racing at this level and it will be great to test myself against the best in the world.

Q: With so little time, how have you prepared?
Millie: With four weeks to prepare, essentially I’ve been trying to get to the velodrome as much as possible in Manchester and Derby. Getting used to the feel of a new bike and track again whilst also preparing for the road races too. It has been quite a challenge as usually road and track are at separate points in the year but this time round they’re all together in the space of two weeks.

Q: Tell us about your new bike?
Millie: I have a new Handsling TR3evo, which I love. I was worried I would not have time to get used to the bike, but as soon as I was on the track it felt comfortable, responsive and stiff. The paint job is really eye-catching and I think it’s going to stand out at this event. I chose Handsling because I loved the look of the track frame, but also because it has proof of performance at the highest level. We got onto track yesterday and the bike really does feel great.

Q: What are your aims and expectations?
Millie: My hopes at this event are to simply execute the best ride possible on the day. I am racing the very best people in my category, most of whom have won a title before so in terms of results, I don’t really have any expectations for my debut at this level. If I can come away with something shiny, that would be a massive bonus.
